    No
    Sorry
You ran what was probably a QUICK scan
I forgot to add you need to set it to run a COMPLETE scan
(An overnight job, 12 hours is average!)

Done. Took 22 hrs this time and came back clear again....

Will check signstation now. Surely I must have the correct piece of software by now, my desktop is packed!!

Well I tried Signstation. First it said the plug in had failed to initialise. Then it played the short video. And then IE said a problem with page had caused it to close .........

I've checked it repeatedly and its the same each time.

The antivirus software ran again when I signed in and again it found nothing. Its putting up barriers to other programmes starting and asking me to create "new rules" for how to treat them.

Which is the better malware and antivirus software to keep? The last one is only for a trial period of 30 days. Also my desktop is packed - can I delete/uninstall some of them?

Did you install the licensed version of Avast, rather than the free version? Worthwhile turning off the Avast firewall, and making sure the standard Windows firewall is on.

Try uninstalling from Control Panel > Programs and Feautures:
    Adobe Flash & Adobe Shockwave
    Quicktime

    Then reinstall them:
    1. Adobe Flash download here
    2. Adobe Shockwave download here
    3. Quicktime plugin download here

What else do you have installed? Can you make a list, easy using Hijackthis:
    1. Run Hijackthis, and make sure you are on the main menu, so you can go to Misc tools: http://www.users.on.net/~russ/hjtmisc.png
    2. On this page, click on Open Uninstall Manager (http://www.users.on.net/~russ/hjtstartuplist.png)
    3. Do 'save list' and it'll ask to save a txt file, then just copy paste that. Can email it if you don't want it posted here, and can delete the txt file afterwards.

Right well I couldnt work out which versio of AVAST I had downloaded so redid it and don't recognise it so think I missed doing it ;( Hope it doesnt affect things too much, have done it now and I think I have the free version (I couldnt find any mention of a licenced version on the download you gave me - Do you mean I have to get a code or something?)

I have uninstalled Adobe Flash, Shockwave and Quicktime (I still have Adobe Air though - should I ) . I haven't reinstalled them so that when I check what progs I have got I can check they the whole thing of each them has gone and somehow a left over bit isnt interfering somewhere. Not sure if that theory works in practise.

When you said that your antivirus was only a "30 day trial" I wondered which one, because AFAIK you'd only installed Avast and IOBit Malware fighter, both of which are free. Avast does has a paid version as well, so I wondered if you had installed that instead.

I wouldn't worry about Adobe Air - that's just for running flash programs outside of the browser, so shouldn't affect anything.

If it was me, by this point I'd back everything important to an external hard drive and start fresh. I would also wipe the MBR just in case a rootkit was hiding there. You were looking for your installation DVDs the last time I asked about this possibility - if you find them, it might save some further hassle. I know you've spent ages trying to fix things, but it'd be worth finding those DVDs.

If you do reinstall, then as a first step I would make sure your only antivirus installed and running is either Avast or Avira antivir, and set either one's heuristics to high (also set Avira to detect fraudulent software among other things when it asks on installation), secondly stick on Prevx 3.0 free and set the Heuristics to high (so that it won't let you install anything that isn't known to be safe), edit: then thirdly install Malwarebytes ;)only then attach your external hard drive to scan it with both your antivirus and with Malwarebytes.

I would also use the following preventatives:
    • ClearCloudDNS webfilter (easiest)
    • A hosts file like MVPS or MalwareDomainList (or both using Hostsman) and update it regularly
    • Firefox with Adblock, subscribed to Easylist and MalwareDomainList (second easiest)
    • Sandboxie to browse in
If you are interested in any of these possibilities, just let me know if you want more information.

I'd uninstall and never use such a tool (registry cleaners), more likely to cause harm than good:
    Advanced SystemCare 4

Also this just to get it off the list:

    King Kong Capture (remove only)

what is this? www.artistscope.com is blocked by ClearCloudDNS's malware filter, but I can't tell why. Virustotal.com and URLvoid.com don't show a problem with the site.
    ArtistScope Plugin IE

These seem to be leftovers from old modems, if you are using an ADSL router then can uninstall:
Conexant HDA D110 MDC V.92 Modem

    Digital Line Detect
    Huawei modem

This seems like its an antivirus? No need if you have Avast, unless you are paying for Dr Web?
    Dr.Web Security Space 6.0 (x86

    Other security installed:

    IObit Malware Fighter
    IObit Toolbar v4.4
    Rapport
    Rapport

Rapport is a resource hog, and IOBit is an untrustworthy company.
You might be better protected overall and possibly faster with Prevx Safeonline (checks the cloud before you install anything, good for zero-day attacks. You can set it so nothing newly made that isn't known to be safe is blocked http://www.prevx.com/safebook.asp). Prevx Safeonline is basically Prevx 3.0 free but with the identity protection part as well.

Some do complain that Prevx Safeonline slows down browsing, so good to be aware of this.

I have (what I believe to be) my installation disks I don't have an external hard drive.
Should I download those things either way? I am not planning on going through this EVER again.

I have uninstalled loads of programmes as well as the ones you mentioned, including the security stuff hopefully this will free up lots of space making it all run faster. I have also got rid of Opera and Firefox, not sure if they are better than IE but at the moment I'm not planning on using them.

I am not paying for Dr.Web as far as I am aware ..... free version only ;)

Rapport is refusing to be uninstalled as is QuickTime in the Control Panal>Programs and Feature section.

I am planning on changing my email over to gmail (currently on AOL). I have stored all the emails for the various websites I sign up to in my email for years but am planning on buying an address book to record them in instead > any other ideas on remembering passwords (I have uninstalled Roboform too).

I notice that the Prevx only detects malware > I was thinking maybe I should invest in something which could do ALL the security stuff for me and get rid of it efficiently. Would it be beneficial? I previously had McAfee until it run out with the guarentee, is it worth it?

Clearing space won't really make a difference to speed, just stopping programs running. A good program to stop autoruns is Sysinternals Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902), but only untick things you are 100% sure about.

What error is given for uninstalling Rapport & Quicktime? Can use Revo Uninstaller to help uninstall those programs (http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html) - just be careful if Revo starts trying to take iTunes with it, and double check the registry entries and files/folders it wants to remove.

May as well see if your computer is useable for what you need it for in its current state, and grab Adobe Shockwave Flash & the Quicktime plugin.

With passwords, the biggest issue is the email address - sites have the "forgot your password" dialog which lets anyone with access to your email account reset most website passwords at will. I'm pretty basic - one password for most things, and something completely different for email, and something completely different for financials. I use the standard firefox password manager for sites.
