As far as I know they stopped it. It definately used to exist though, I got a full retail box of windows XP pro this way some years back, I'll have a look to see if I can find any details of it. A word of caution though - and not meant to deter you, but it took a long time for Microsoft to process (ie long enough that I had already bought the software!)
Personally, I'm wondering if you got an original disk, but the person kept the key - but not confinced.
The other way to go is with student license stuff, if you are a student - seems like you are using student office, or you have a family member who is you can get the software very cheaply. Websites to try are https://www.pugh.co.uk https://www.rm.com/thebasement or [STRIKE]possibly the best is to go direct to microsoft here http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/windows/default.aspx where it appears to only cost about £20.[/STRIKE]
That is the US website. The UK website is here and a lot more expensive.0 -

was hoping to get microsoft to give me a proper copy as someone else said in this post, does anyone know if they do do this? or is it wishful thinking?
You will be using a proper copy. A properly licenced copy at that.
I would not advocate anything else.0 -

the cheap versions of Win 7 on those sites are all upgrades, does that mena I'd Win 7 that isnt genuine)
I got my Office 2010 from a site for about £42 I think, was for students but I'm not a student
You can use an upgrade disc to install cleanly. You can also just use a normal disc and then use the licence code of the upgrade disc to activate.0 -
Sometimes you will get a 'cannot find previous Windows installation. Upgrade cannot complete' message when clean-installing with an upgrade disc, but if you reboot and choose 'Upgrade' again, it will detect the files it put-on first-time round and install (this happened when I re-installed it on a laptop).
Option 2 is to go to PC World and copy-down the COA from one of the display computers then use the 'Change key' option within Windows to use the new COA (I did this with MS Works once).
Option 3 is to buy a Student edition from one of the student software sites and use the COA for yor already installed version.Never Knowingly Understood.

Ouch those rotters (that was close almost sounded racist), I guess pugh would be the better option then by far as they only charge half that price.
Personally, if one was to qualify, I'd say buy the academic, go for the paypal route to try and get your money back (failing that the credit card company may well give you a refund), then try and track down the microsoft option - afterall if it works you'll get a full retail package (far superior and you could sell that on ebay for a pretty price - and the delay wont effect you because you'll already have the software).
@OP Finally, rather than incriminate yourself you might consider rewording a few of your earlier posts relating to your position with student software. Student software is only for students and teachers to my knowledge. You don't want to get yourself in trouble (either from the ms or the mods here). There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -

I'm sure he was saying the he isn't a student, but his girlfriend is...
MS certainly wouldn't give him any trouble. They are more concerned about mass fraud.0 -
Student software is also available to family members of students, if that helps.
(P.S. A couple of posts mention getting in touch with ebay, but I think the OP said it was not ebay he purchased via.)0 -

Was from ebid (I think), but a delay in seller sending it out meant by the time I'd recieved and loaded it and then the error message appeared, paypal's time limit had expired to raise a claim :mad:0 -
