I've just tried BETA 2 of 11.04. It will leave you in tears. Its a good lesson in how to screw up something that was very good.
Hmmmm your not the first person I have heard that from unfortunately, I will wait and see though before jumping shipUbuntu is ok for beginners - once you get past that, its Debian all the way http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=60419
er I am definitely only a beginner, I just want an operating system that does what its supposed too and at a reasonable speed

If you prove to Microsoft you were scammed, and forward them all the scammers details/photos of disks, don't they give you a free legit copy?0

Eherm this is Microsoft we are talking about.....
Anyway its not Microsoft's problem - buyer be conned etc...personally I think one takes a risk when using certain sites to buy software like this (and I have done so myself, fortunately only to get a copy of XP on the cheap a few years back). Responsibility should be the sites who allow their services to be used to sell software.0 -
It is Microsoft's problem, because that's a lost sale. Looks like they are still offering replacements.
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/licensing/homeuser/notifications.mspx.If you have unwittingly bought counterfeit software, you may qualify for a complimentary replacement under our genuine offer. (We offer a free replacement when you have high quality counterfeit, not a CD-R with Windows scrawled on it! And you'll need to give us a receipt.) If you don't qualify for a replacement, you can buy a genuine copy from us at a special online price.0 -

try ringing 0844 800 2400 and select option 0 (zero).[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.

The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -

Have looked at this problem for you and have found a way of solving it, albeit a relatively technical solution.
If you get nowhere with Microsoft or eBay, you can look at it.
Will send you a PM with the details.0 -
cheers stilltheone, got your pm
was hoping to get microsoft to give me a proper copy as someone else said in this post, does anyone know if they do do this? or is it wishful thinking?0 -
As far as I know they stopped it. It definately used to exist though, I got a full retail box of windows XP pro this way some years back, I'll have a look to see if I can find any details of it. A word of caution though - and not meant to deter you, but it took a long time for Microsoft to process (ie long enough that I had already bought the software!)
Personally, I'm wondering if you got an original disk, but the person kept the key - but not confinced.
The other way to go is with student license stuff, if you are a student - seems like you are using student office, or you have a family member who is you can get the software very cheaply. Websites to try are https://www.pugh.co.uk https://www.rm.com/thebasement or possibly the best is to go direct to microsoft here http://www.microsoft.com/student/en/us/software/windows/default.aspx where it appears to only cost about £20.There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -
Thanks Horlock
the cheap versions of Win 7 on those sites are all upgrades, does that mena I'd Win 7 that isnt genuine)
I got my Office 2010 from a site for about £42 I think, was for students but I'm not a student
