Hi, first time post after much lurking and reading of useful info.

Have been researching laptops in the last few days and am torn between the Toshiba one mentioned above and this one for the same price in curry's,

    http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0048846864.1165188401@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccfdaddjieehlilcflgceggdhhmdgmj.0&category_oid=&sku=176555&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null

    Compaq V6133EU......

What do you all think? Which should i go for? Is the toshiba one better cos of the brand and build?

    Hels

I had a budget of £500. Was going to buy Toshiba A100-147. Currys was doing them for £499. I chose this because it had core duo while others in the price range had the ”normal” processor. Compared to the Compaq it has 2 extra usb ports, a firewire connection and tv out but has a smaller hard drive. Last week went to currys to buy it found that the price went up to £599. Seems they made an error with the price. Have now found out that it has come down to 499.

Looking around i came across this compaq with AMD Turion 64×2 which is equivalent to intel core duo. PCworld is doing them at £499. Other brand is Advent which i was not keen on. Since i have a normal pc at home at that time i cannot justify spending an extra £100 for facilities which i already have.

Since my kids are banned from using my PC i decided to buy a laptop. It will be used for surfing the net, kids games online and their homework. Decided to go for a cheap laptop that technology wise will last a long time. I narrowed it down to this compaq and toshiba. It depends what you want to use the laptop for. If for downloading movies/photos from your digital camera then go for toshiba which has firewire but then again it has a small hard drive. If like me its for surfing then go for the compaq. It feels well built and nice to use compared to toshiba.

i am getting around 2hours on the battery but since it is used at home normally plug it into the mains

here is another section of the website for feedback on compaq

Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D
  • Cheers for that wazza, very helpful.

Think i will probably go for the compaq. Have read good things about the amd processors, plus the bigger hd. And i do like the look of it too. Might try to get PC world to price match it so i can get it asap and not wait for delivery.

Just a quick question, does the cache difference on the toshiba and the compaq make much of a difference to performance? ie the toshiba is 2mb and the compaq is 512kb if memory serves me right.

Looked at so many laptop specs lately i'm confusing myself!

oh if you do buy the compaq....im ordering mine now. You cant click it on the main page again now but theres a tick box when you go into that at the bottom which you need to untick to not get that symantec junk.
  • Right, just been to buy my laptop.

Was going to get the COMPAQ V6133EU from currys, webprice £499.99 with the 10% off voucher and free delivery. Thought i would go to the store and see if i could pick it up there and not wait for it to be delivered.

Was a toss up between the compaq above and the toshiba, similar price and specs etc, but i was going for the compaq for the greater hard drive and reviews above.

Spoke to the man in Currys, explained all of the above, he said i couldn't pick the pc up from them as it was a web price only, but had a look at another one and found this one for me:

    COMPAQ C350EA

Intel Core Duo T2050 Processor 1.60GHz

    533 MHz FSB

    2MB Cache

    1024 MB RAM

    120 GB Hard Drive

    DVD ReWriter MultiDrive

    15.4" Widescreen HD Brightview Display

    Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition

    128MB IMA 950 Shared Graphics

    1 Year FREE Warranty

This compaq was £569.99 in Currys, but he said he would honour the 10% off for me as they needed the business (didn't even have to show him evidence of the 10% off).

In the end without very much debate he dropped the price to £499.99. The same laptop is currently £649.99 in PC World. So i bought the laptop for £499.99 cos of the increased hard drive ( i store lots of photos and music etc).

To cut a long story short, it was very easy to get the drop in price so i am very happy with my purchase! Curry's seem very eager to discount as the store was very quiet (it was one in Liverpool).

Thanks to all the people who have helped on here.

The laptop hunt has ended! For me anyway. Goodluck the rest of you. Will let you know how i get on with it after a couple of days if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the update. This looks like it might be ideal for my girlfriend's Christmas as she's got loads of music so the bigger hard drive would be really useful.

One minus might be that she travels around a lot and weighing in at just under 3kg it sounds kind of heavy. How would you say it feels for carrying about? Any more thought after using it would be great as may order in the next day or so. Cheers.

I would consider external drives as they are so cheap and well efficent you can get small ones now.

Agree with PM about buying an external hard drive to expand your hard drive size. Also the external drive can be used to back up your data.
