Why should the parent pay? I would suggest that your son pays out of his pocket money or other money, and maybe it will teach him to be a bit more careful with other people's clothing in future. I would not expect to pay as a parent, children need to learn to accept responsibility themselves.

Just to make things clear, I am not "a track suit wearing bottom feeder" nor am I on any kind of benefits. I wasn't aware that reading this forum labelled me as anything other than a mother:cool:

Right thats that off my chest, back to the original question.....

    I wouldn't pay a penny.

When anyone plays a contact sport they take the risk that either they, or less importantly, their clothing can be damaged.

I find it quite shocking that the boys parent expects you to cough up.

I agree with you beast as £25 isn't particularly expensive for a t-shirt so wouldn't seem out of order that the boy was out playing in it BUT if the boy had been wearing an expensive designer top that had cost £250 I might not be so keen to agree with you :o (shame on me :o)

I think £25 is expensive for a tshirt, clothing can be bought so cheaply these days. Maybe he would be better off playing in a cheap tshirt from Primark or the supermarket, even if it wasn't ripped it's likely to be badly stained by mud or grass. Would have complained so much if he'd been wearing a top that cost £5 or less?

While it's nice of someone to offer to replace something that they've damaged, I think it was quite rude of the other boy to keep texting about it. Maybe next time he will play in something more suitable.

If I were in this situation and had decided to pay, then I would pay it myself. I wouldn't dream of making my son pay for any damaged sustained while playing a sport. Kids, even teenagers, need to play without worrying about clothes.

Having said that, I don't think mine have ever had a t-shirt costing £25. Shoes and coats yes, but not t-shirts.

I can't believe someone would expect you to cough up? It was her son's decision to play rugby in his shirt, accidents happen.

I'd not give them a penny, and likewise, I'd not expect someone to pay me for a ripped item of clothing if it was during a game etc (obviously damaging with intent is different!)

I think it is absolutely absurd that you or he should be expected to pay for a new shirt. It's rugby, ripped shirts happen. He shouldn't have worn it playnig if he was so precious about it.

Erm, it's only a flipping tshirt!! Accidents happen!
I wouldn't pay. Sorry but the kid and his mum need to get over it.

I absolutley wouldn't pay, on principle that he was stupid wearing a new shirt! At 16 yrs of age he should be more responsible for his own belongings. If he wants to play rugby, then he should have dressed appropriatley, and expected that there was a strong chance that clothing could get stained, ripped or completley ruined!

quite right the frind shouldn't have been wearing something expensive to play rugby in, but it was your son that ripped it - so I would pay up. You never know if this could escalate.
