They don't sound much of a friend, so I would push them hard for a contribution. Make a stand on it and ditch them if they still refuse after seeing how seriously you feel about it because they will have shown that they are not a friend.

That is the best advice here.

Pay the fine - you have to.

Ask for the whole money back from your "friend" if they don't at least pay half - dump them - they are no friend of yours.

I think there is a general misunderstanding of what constitutes 'moral', being confused with a fuzzy definition of 'fair'. The friend has no obligation to pay anything, you agree on a continual basis to their terms of friendship and follow their advice willingly.

The friend focused your thoughts on your own greed and desire to be 'socially acceptably naughty'. You committed the offence because of mixture of greed and social motivators, I'd be fairly sure that you did have the money to pay for the original spot selected; This may be defined as being spineless, and even that you are inherently a bad person with the excuse of being guided presents itself.

The only question of morality is your electing to commit an offence you believed you were entitled to and would get away with. As is usually the case, the fine is a helpful reminder of what's expected of you. Personally if I had of been goaded into this, I'd certainly not have posted a thread here!

Your friend may well be morally corrupt, but until you decide to smarten up, why beat your friend up for following his crap advice, after-all isn't that what friends are for?

If you really feel aggrieved by the friend, you could always drive him half way and leaf him at a motorway service station, that'll surely cost as much to get out of as sharing the spoils of his advice.

  • As others have said, if you both overslept then you should both pay the fine.

If he was a decent friend he'd agree, or offer to pay the whole lot - I know if my friend incurred a fine from parking where I insisted they should then I'd feel terribly guilty and pay the lot.

    Some friend!

I think I'd politely thank your friend for reminding you it is your car, then drop him off at the nearest railway station on the way out of London.

I'd stop calling this person your friend, because they certainly aren't. Unfortunately it was your car and ultimately it was your decision to park where you did, so you are responsible for the fine. I still think your friend is a prize jerk, but if you do not pay, the penalties will keep heaping up in your name, not your so-called friend's.

They stuck double yellow lines outside my place of residence. I've recieved 4 parking tickets and binned them all with no comeback. Once you sign the ticket and send it back you've committed yourself to pay.

Some people from the provinces don't understand how central London driving works.
It is absolutely dog eat dog
All it takes is a photo.

How is the car today? Someone scraped the "wing" mirror? "Keyed" the paintwork? Bumper parked? Drilled your fuel tank? (Drive a banger?)

Congratulations on getting in and out of London without being picked for doing more than 20/30/40/50/60/70 & variable MPH speed camera limits; not to mention box junction and one way/left/right turn restrictions - perhaps the notifications has not yet arrived?

For parking, each borough can make its own rules, and unless you have a really good map you won't know the boundaries.

Some boroughs have restrictions 7 days per week and almost 24 hours per day so don't rely on the line in the gutter or the flashes on the curb stones - read the sign before your wheels stop turning,
Some areas require payment by mobile phone.

Which of you were drunk when you parked?
How much was the pay and display? Some meters charge 5 quid an hour.
When did the restrictions restart the next morning did you both make a note?
What day of the week was the next morning?

One final thought have you had the nice photos of you driving your car because you over slept and got done by a Central Zone Charging camera and failed to realise and pay the daily movement charge.

Next time you will be using your oyster cards?

Your car, your responsibility to drive and park within the law. But morally he should have offered.
    Pay fine
    Ditch 'friend'.
  • I don't park in London but surely if you'd have parked in the pay and display and been late getting up you'd still havea fine?
    Bump due 22nd September
  • Pay the fine - you incurred it.

    Dump your 'friend'.

half a parking ticket is cheap

someone I know did similar years ago, parked the car for a pub visit and then they walked home

there was a big storm overnight and throughout the morning, so they didn't hurry to fetch the car

at lunchtime they were watching the TV news, and a report about the weather showed included a flood ......... which included their car submerged almost to roof level
