I am so sorry lionhearted girl. It is a tough day for you. Please try to remember what a loving home you gave to your dog. Enjoy your cuddles with him today. What can I say about tonight? Just that my thoughts will be with you. Do you have anyone to go to see afterwards, so that you are not going straight home to an empty house?

  • thanks Wordsmith - my mum is coming over later this evening to mop up a bit. In lots of ways I am used to coming home to an empty house as I only have him part time. If i had him all the time I think it would be worse.

But this time I will have a lead and collar but no pooch, and this will be not quite right!

You are right, he has had a good home with both of us, occasional lodgings with my mum and dad and XH's parents, and everyone who has met him has been besotted with him. So many retired racers aren't so lucky, but his has been a very long and very happy retirement and he has been very spoilt.

I think of all the daft things he has done over the years, from falling in the pond Wile E Coyote style while chasing a ball which my stupid XH had thrown for him, to barging people/other dogs off the sofa if they have encroached on his space.

He has tried to chase many crisp packets, cyclists, cats and bunnies while out and about, and been beaten up by a psycho cat who launched himself off a high garden wall.

He has escaped twice (something we now refer to as self-walking), both times safely obeying the green cross code and making it safely across several busy roads and traffic lights. One of these times he was picked up by a very nice lady who took him home to keep him safe for the night - we were mortified to hear he had made himself very comfy on her sofa!!

He is very subdued this afternoon - think he has worn himself out after all the drama of the morning. he took himself out for a bask in the sun a little while ago so I went and shared my lunch with him.

I am working away now trying to stay calm and enjoying listening to the TT drinking more tea than I have ever drunk in my life.

XF would want to know that the dog is going, but I am holding off texting him as if he turns up at my house I am not strong enough to ignore him today and this would be A Bad Thing.

    Awww Lionheartedgirl

I am sorry to hear your news. Its sounds as though its the right thing to do but not an easy or nice decision to make. It sounds as though the pooch has had a wonderful retirement with you and he is very lucky.
I know where you're coming from with looking for a new pet, I got a new cat when we ours passed away. We reserved a kitten but had to wait until he was old enough to leave his Mum so were without a mog for about 8 weeks and it was strange without a cat at home but waiting for that time made us think about our old cat but look forward to our new one, if that makes sense.

Thinking of you and sending hugs

    Take care xxx

Good morning, Lionheartedgirl. I was thinking of you yesterday evening. You did the right thing, although it was so hard. You know that. I do hope you spent the evening with someone and that you spend today doing relaxing activities.

Are you prepared for dealing with the other emotions this might stir up - exes and things?

Look after yourself, lovey. Today is for pampering.

  • morning all,

well it was very hard as predicted but we had the lovely, lovely greyhound specialist vet, waited outside under the tree in the sunshine and he came out to us and said how sorry he was. he explained a little more about the larynx problem which confirmed we were doing the right thing.

it was so very sad, and I wished and wished that it didn't have to happen. but he had started to struggle again yesterday afternoon (getting excited about his impending tea :rotfl:) so it was the right thing to do.

Mum came round last night and we chatted away about not very much. then I opened my front door to see her off, and in the corner of the porch there was a card that my Brownies had made - they had all coloured in a little square which the leaders had stuck onto a bigger card, and they had all written a little message on the back. There are dogs and bubbles of all shapes and sizes (dog's race name was Double Bubble so he was Bubble for short) and lots of lovely messages which I could imagine them reading to me. So of course that was it and off I went!! but what a nice thing to do!!

I spoke to one of my friends and had some lovely FB messages and texts.

Today is a bit of a wobbly one, had to write myself a list so that I get all the important things done (mustn't forget to go to teach my harp pupil later).

My house faces a main road so I decided some large sunflowers might cheer us all up :rotfl: so I am going to plant them today. It may be a little late but I hope not. Other than that I shall potter about, put blankets and bowls away and think about what's next.

Oh and the big TT race is today so I can listen to the radio and follow the timing completely guilt free :j

Thanks for posting lionheartedgirl - I was worried about you. Felt a tear spring to my eye reading about your card from the Brownies - what a lovely, lovely thought from them.

    Hi Lionheartedgirl,
Just caught up with your posts.
You were so lucky to have Bubble in your life and Bubble was so lucky to have you throughout their retirement.
I hope you are okay. Big hugs are being sent down from Tyneside.
    Take care
