TBH Tara I figured it wasn't even worth the walk into town to try :) plus I would have had to find a little pot to put the last bit of my mega mushroom stuff into...so I gave up before I even started. Some MS I am :)

Martin has just posted on his FB that MSE were told there was enough for the two days.

Seems to me that someone at the Origins Press office should be getting their hands slapped. If you work for a Press office for a fairly large brand and are running a promo like this you should be asking:

    who are you?
    what is your publication/media outlet?
    who will you be telling?
how many will you be telling?

especially if you then go on to say 'there will be plenty'.

A simple google of Martin Lewis or MSE would have told them the scale of interest in the stuff he says and a simple follow up phone call to say 'this is a very limited offer' would have covered them.

And they should have at least offered sample sizes to everyone who came in with an empty as that is a ongoing recycling promotion.

It will be interesting to see if they run this promotion next year as it is apparently an annual event for them.

Thing is it is a product with a retail value of £16 so OF COURSE they wouldn't have enough for the 5 million e-mail subscribers and nation of morning TV watchers across the country!!

They weren't giving away hundreds at each outlet - How on earth would they be able to AFFORD to do that

Do you really think that it costs anywhere near £16 to produce the product?

If the cost price of the ingredients and packaging was more than 50p I would be astonished. The other £15.50 that makes up the retail cost is profit.

  • I can't find any ingredient lists on their website but if they really do use all natural stuff then it's probably more like £5 or so to make the product. They seem to have a lot of stands in department stores, would presume you have to rent those? So probably more like £6+ profit per item (still a lot!)

Well if you do fine any dupes for the exfolinat wash they were offering, please say so! U have not found anything remotly similar yet been hunting for years! No products I have found work as well, don't irritate my skin and those that are similar, cost similar. If all the big brands are out there scamming us, we really have no choice if we want such products.

I assure you that it doesn't cost £5 or anywhere near that price for the ingredients, in fact the largest cost of the product itself is most likely the packaging. The cosmetics industry turns low cost ingredients into a 'premium product', with very significant markups at each stage in the distribution chain.

Are they scamming you by making a huge profit on their product? It depends. If you are happy paying that price, then it is worth the price you are prepared to pay.

It is really the difference between cost and value.

In one big store yesterday I saw the origins sales assistant crying after she had spent the day dealing with unhappy people, with the last ones yelling at her and abusing her. I am disappointed at the poor judgement shown in publicising this offer without concern for the the supply- the email was a mistake I think. But also it would be better if people could be more philosophical about things that are obviously not the sales assistant's fault- and in a department store she can't get anyone to make another offer to compensate, she's on her own there employed by Origins I suppose. Shame.
