  • Grrr. Went to update spreadsheet and a whole stack of data is missing from the PC! Including my spreadsheet.

Now I work with PCs and have done every day for the last decade at least and I am the first to say "Data does not just delete itself!"

However something odd is going on here. My BF lost a whole folder of stuff off of a (partitioned) drive about 6 months ago...now exactly the same has happened to me.

Family & friend photos, spreadsheets, recipes, letters - a whole stack of stuff has just gone and are pretty irreplaceable as they are from years ago and I am no longer in touch with some of the people concerned.

I have searched the whole of the partitioned drive it was on, the C drive and even a separate physical disk within the pc just in case it got moved by mistake.....nothing.

BF only played a game on the PC yesterday & today and swears he hasn't been anywhere near Excel or Explorer. And I believe him.

    Nothing in the recycle bin.

It's most odd. And annoying!! Especially since I forgot to take a back up

I now have to construct a brand new spreadsheet and try & remember all the forward things I had scheduled in.

    Oh joy.

Oh well...upwards & onwards! Tis nothing compared to some of the problems people are coping with, tis just annoying. Bloomin' 'puters!

Voice of dissent: Yes it does!

Double click on "My computer". Select the drive in question. Right click - select "Properties". Click on the "Tools" tab and click on "Check now" under the error checking portion.

Let us know how it gets on.

  • Hi Zee.

I did a chkdsk earlier - is that the same thing you mean? It didn't bring anything back.

However I followed your instructions but when I go into the properties for my D drive (the problem drive in question) there is no Tools menu anyhow.

I was doing some reading up on 'net and it seems others have problems with disappearing folders off of logical drives too. Unfortunately the remedies I was reading for them are not for XP Home Edition.

I will investigate further another day......had enough for one night, just sat & recreated my spreadsheet from now till April 2007 and just hope I haven't missed anything.

    Time will tell.

    Hey, it's nearly Christmas!

  • So it's all over for another year...phew!

But I had a nice Christmas though, I can't deny it.

Today I have been very proactive and it feels good.

Got up early as I had to be somewhere at 10.00am but was then home again for 10.45am. Decided to go through the house like a dose of salts and also do lots of paperwork-y type things too.

Got a little freebie in the post today or a sachet of Twinings new indulgent 65% cocoa solids hot chocolate and I will behaving that later before bedtime!

I still have a few things to do on my list but I felt like typing out a little update.

I hope nothing is going to come up and bite me on the a s s after saying this but I just feel quite positive today and very much bursting with energy.

Maybe it is because I was ill in the run up to Christmas and today was the first day I actually felt hunger pangs in my stomach since last Wednesday. (You know, we're so blessed if we can say things like that...saying a silent thank you for my life however debt ridden it is at the moment!)

I've written out all my thank you cards/letters and I already had some stamps & stationery so not costing me a bean. Will pop over to the post box shortly and hope people get them before New Year's Eve.

For Christmas I got £45 worth of Boots vouchers!!! I am sooo grateful, they will really help me out.

I need to investigate if I can use them online - they are the credit card things with an amount on. If anyone reads this and knows the answer - please feel free to post and update me!

OK off to sort some washing out.

Happy New Year all - here's hoping 2007 brings better things for all and the strength to cope with any curveballs that get us along the way.

From boots.com: Giftcards cannot be used in the Republic of Ireland or on boots.com. :( Enjoy spending them anyway!!

Glad to hear you're feeling positive and proactive LA!

Have you had any luck recovering your lost data? Worrying that it can just do that!

  • Warning! Warning! Self Indulgent/Self Pitying Post Ahead!

Ahh another sacrifice in the name of becoming debt free.

There is a particular sport that I am a big big fan of (as a spectator) and I have been to the annual World Championships of it quite a few times before and always had the most fantastic time.

Unfortunately a lot of the time they (the champs) are held in places like China, America, Australia which is totally out of my price range so I try to make the most of it when they are held in Europe.

In 2007 it is in Majorca and just before my birthday. Just how ace would that be?

However I just know that although I will have paid off credit cards by then and possibly my overdraft, if I go to this, it's going to set me back anywhere between about £300 - £500 just for about 5 days and there's only one way I could do it.....borrow on the overdraft again. :(

So I am going to have to say no.

Gutted really gutted I have to say but.....I have to be honest with myself, I just can't do it at what will be the very very early stage of overdraft & credit card free-ness.

It's all my own fault for not getting a grip sooner and I am so p*ssed off with myself.

Oh Lord. To anyone else with a habit for spending money on credit cards & overdrafts on silly things that don't mean anything...I implore you (drama Queen!! ;) ) please try and stop and save some of that money.

It's just not worth frittering cash away because it's gut wrenching when you know you are going to miss out on a fantastic trip in the Spring time with your friends that they will talk about for years to come.

Also, I very much adore "Strictly" type dancing and there is a show coming to my God Forsaken city in February - one of the very few exciting shows to hit this place - and tickets are £22.50. I REALLY want to go. But there is no way I can buy a ticket for that this month, not an ice cube's chance in hell. I will take my chances that they are still available after January's pay day and will save like mad between now and then with the odd 50p here & there and will feel proud if I can walk in there and book in with cash I have saved! :A

I will remain strong on this one and NOT book the ticket...I am trying to re-educate myself in a big way in that if I don't have the money, I *can't* have it and there are very few exceptions. Part of this re-education is being disappointed if I miss out. That'll learn me for being cr A p with money for so long won't it? :o

  • I hope this is not 'cheating' but I just updated my signature as I needed something to boost me after that little outpouring.

I actually pay another £300 off the Tesco VISA on 10th January which brings it down to £500 but I updated it early seems I have allocated the money and set up the payment by BACS already. It *will* be paid no fear about that, in my mind it has already gone (hence the high overdraft figure).

I just need to see that figure down to £500 to stop me going slightly loopy.
