  • I think if you have small children it just makes them impatient if they are up too early, I know someone who has hers up before Hallowe'en!

Mine will go up about 10 days before and come down 2 wks after x

Good for you. I find it intensely irritating that people put up trees and (outside) lights as far back as mid-November.

This is straightforwardly ridiculous. Forcing the rest of us (a la passive smoking) into 'inhaling' Christmas way before it's due is an intrusion and I object to it.

Why don't they just have done with it and leave them up all year round? Presumably that's the logic of this - unless they're going to come clean and admit that 'Christmas' does not actually start until Advent.

I am a teacher and like to put mine up the last day of term. Really feels like the holidays then. :D
  • I will start to put ours up from the 4th onwards (takes several days to do it properly!) but we're not buying the tree until next weekend. We always go to a garden centre and choose a real 7 foot tree with the kids (christmas tradition) and last year we bought it around the 3rd and it was half dead by christmas day! Doh!

I think if the decorations went up before December they would drive me nuts and the kids would think it was just around the corner, but bearing in mind that it takes several days to put them up, I don't want to do it to close to christmas either. It's a fine balance!

  • Does anyone festoon the outside of their house like the Griswolds christmas? We put a tame wreath on our front door, but feel we are a bit boring compared with some people. I'm sure the kids would love it if we bought a 6 foot snowman and put it in the front garden! I'd love to see our neighbours faces if we did that. It's tempting just for a laugh!

  • No tree or decorations up here as such, but the Christmas patterned mugs and glasses are now being used as we have passed 1st Dec. Also the sugar bowl and salt and pepper have been switched for their Christmas counterparts. Slowly other bits and pieces will emerge, tea towels, the tablecoth, coasters, I love it!
...it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.

I've started ours over the last two days. Just finished the tree, starting on the other bits :) TBh next yr they will probably go up at the end of term, but this yr the house is really bland (just moved in ) and we cant restyle as we intend to extend it in a big way in spring. The decs make it far more homely :)
