As it stands at the moment, my account has not been out of my overdraft for 9 years
even with pay day (nhs student bursary) my account remains in the red. In fact its become that bad that i foolishly say I have 50 quid left when in reality im 550 in the red of a now 600 overdraft to spare. I have this month removed the reserve use. I have made plans to finally do what I have been putting off for a couple of years, and that is to transfer all of my income in to my account at another bank and then set up a standing order to pay my overdraft of slowly but surely.
TOTAL AT START £13606.90 27/03/2018
TOTAL CURRENT £13445.90 29/03/20180 -
I think if you're talking just about your current account - the idea should be to have as close to zero as your budgeting can safely allow.
Mine typically has between £50-£100 in though, just in case I ever make a mistake with something.
Current accounts aren't for keeping money in really.0 -
I work at tesco and get paid 4 weekly so not always at the end of the month, next payday is friday. Luckily living at home and just paying bord i normally always have some money left by the end of the month. The day before payday i always check whats in my account and allocate most of whats left to my isa and just leave a little in my bank incase im going to need more money the next month, so then on payday i have maybe £100 in my bank and then whatever ive just been paid for the month. i dont have any loans or credit cards and dont spend much money going out due to illness i normally dont feel up to it.0

16 days till pay day and I am currently £20.62 overdrawn. Joint bank account has about £300 in but that's got to cover food, fuel and a couple of direct debits between now and payday.
I agree that peoples levels of being 'skint' seem very varied. A friend of mine is skint but has about £40k in savings, another is skint and is living hand to mouth. We always say we're skint if we're asked out but what we tend to mean is that any spare money is going on debts or into savings as we're moving house in a few weeks.Wandered away from the MSE track for a while but am back and on a mission! Debts cleared nearly £18k. Now to start saving ...0 -
I was skint when I was a student.
Back then skint meant only being able to choose either beer or food, not both.

I say I've got no money left if my £50 monthly "pocket money" is running out. But in reality I have a lot in the bank because I budget every penny in advance. Pick a day in the future and I can project what my bank balance will be on that day. My current account also functions as my savings account, it's all offset against the mortgage so no need to separate.0

I usually have a matter of pence in my account and have to borrow of my mum, even though she actually owes me more than £150. Grrrr. However i sorted my finances out last week, got a small loan from the bank to clear my credit cards and cancel them, so that will make things easier from now on.:oGetting married 23rd June 2012!!:o0

Reading one of these posts i remember 10 years ago as an employee on around 13-14k a year I used to on pay day take all the money out of the abbey national that was not required for d/d rent etc and put it in to a savings account at another building society. I remember going in one day and one of the finance advisers asked to speak to me about finances so I sat down and had a long chat she brought my account up on screen and went through pointing out I took the all money out with out fail on pay day that was not used for d/d she asked why I NEVER USED THE ABBY SAVINGS I said i did not wish to after a good 15 minutes the lady got a little flustered and actualy said well to be honest you are of no use to us as you with draw all of your money via cash draw or d/d within 48 hours of being paid . Any way I said sorry and I was about to go when she said you have a credit card with us also I said yep 2 years and never used it she also said the same about the o/d limit within 48 hours she cancelled both. So I moved to 1st direct where I was happy but they closed me down after 6 months as I was not paying in enough so I went to natwest where I have been for the last 8 years ahhhhhhhh peace no hassle od I asked to be taken off as good budgeting is important to me and an od is not good budgeting .Cash is king so never been happy with a cc.0

Trying to be debt free I have very little left in the bank before payday. Last month I was very close to the bone having only £4 left the day before payday !! I have no overdraft so it came pretty close to the £15 per day charges for going overdrawn. This month I have £40 left so that will go into my savings account towards paying off my debts. I havent had a holiday for 2 years and certainly wont be having another until all my debts are paid off. We havent had a meal out for ages only on special birthdays. Our only treat at the moment is a nice take-away twice a month. That to me is what being skint really is,not having much to look forward to. However when I am debt free I have vowed never to have another credit card ,loan or even an overdraft . I have learnt my lession you must live by your means otherwise you cant live your life !0
