What do you feed your dog apart from tinned food?

I spoke to the guy who sells it on the way back from my morning walk and he seems to think you don't understand the difference between the company that sells a product and a the company that makes a product, apparently the manufacturer is Golden Acres and they do make Burns, Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved, Pets at home and others. Have a look at the website as it quite clearly shows them bagging JWB, AG etc. He did say it may be only some recipes?
http://www.goldenacres.co.uk/GAbrochures.shtml
He also showed me a bunch of other smaller brand names that have the same recipes as he is selling but at much bigger prices, I dunno as he showed me on the screen it all seemed to make sense?
With regards the ingredients, the site you referenced is American are you sure that the definitions hold true in the UK? He said a lot of US brands had to pull out of selling in the EU due to the much higher levels of regulation over here. Also whoever wrote the page isn't exactly balanced in their views!
All I can say is that it suits my dogs and by the sounds of it the PAH suits your dog. Chances are it is made on the same production line :T
Cheers, I dunno but if there are any other questions I could ask him to come and answer if that is allowed??? I dunno enough about it myself
I may well be mistaken about the makers. I assumed burns had their own factory, but wasn't sure about AG.
The info may be from an American site, but it's pretty standard stuff.
Fresh meat into dry dog food needs to be dehydrated first. Why would the guy you spoke to assume the rendering process was different here lol? Ask any nutritionist, once the moisture is removed from any fresh meat you're left with considerably less meat content. Since meat is at least 75+% moisture, depending on the cut of meat/fish. The fact remains there's a tiny amount of meat in the food. I'm not saying it's a bad company, the duck and turkey have the usuall meat content for a mid range food and are on par price wise with foods of that level.
Obviously the person selling it isn't going to give you detrimental info is he?
I feed Simpsons, Robbies and Wainwrights wet. And I know the most important thing is it does your dog well, but I just wanted to point out that the food isn't actually as good, ingredients wise as it first seems.

I've e-mailed Burns to ask them, I used to feed it but haven't for a while, I've tried to get my dog with kidney failure to eat it but she's not keen.0

They've just got back to me ( they have live web chat ) and they do indeed have the dried food made at Golden acres. I should have asked to who's recipe0

For sure, but turns out he was right about other things you said he was wrong about :rotfl:
Rev, a quick google shows that both Arden Grange and Challenge also list fresh salmon as the first ingredient, I would be interested to find out if what you are saying is true i.e. the very low meat content.0 -
Hi
My two afghans get fed on Kirkwoods (Costco's own) lamb and rice also the chicken and rice. They get gravy bones and pig ears as treats and all the suitable table scraps. Does anyone else use this?0 -

I was mistaken about the factories, very true lol. But The ingredients do the talking themselves. Fresh meat gets dehydrated, once the moisture and fats are go you're left with about 3%.
Obviously you don't believe me, which is fine. But call any pet food company with a nutrition department and ask. Fresh meat is listed before dehydration. In a pet food, you want meat meal.
I never noticed that about Arden Grange, shocking price if there's only 26% fresh salmon in the food. I've only ever used their Lamb and Rice.
I have emailed to see what % of meat meal there is. Will post the reply just for curiosity sake on my behalf. Labels always have the largest ingredient first, and this lists oats and maize before the meat meal so I can't see how it can be a large amount.
I've not heard of challenge pet food.Sigless0 -
They've just got back to me ( they have live web chat ) and they do indeed have the dried food made at Golden acres. I should have asked to who's recipeBurns have their own factory and farmland both of which are in Wales. I remember a few years ago there was some talk about Burns being made else where and I got in touch with them, I got an e-mail back saying they made their own food in their own factories, of course things may have changed.
You were right Kinski, Burns do have a factory in Wales which produces their moist food.Burn's Story
The Idea!
Back in 1993 Veterinary Surgeon John Burns, often heard too often from his clients the same pet problems began advising that nutrition would lead to better health for our pets. However, the difficulty in the pet food market at that time was that it was difficult to find food of good quality and to a suitable receipt that was available in cans or pouches.
John’s vision was to produce moist food for our pets with 21st century thinking: food where the ingredients are ethically sourced, showed care for our environment, supported local communities, created employment and promoted sustainability.
This is how Burns Pet Nutrition was born. John went into producing his own pet food, Burns Real Food, with Golden Acres -our pet food production partner, this dry dog food range –encompassed as many of his core values as possible. The dry food market has been the foundation of Burns Pet Nutrition for the past 16 years and the company has grown from strength to strength each year.
Two years ago, John was able to realise his original vision – in 2009 John, with his son Hamish as the project manager, began setting up his own moist pet food in West Wales, in his own factory using ingredients for the production of their pet food from their own farm or locally sourced (when possible).
PS Kinski- if you are Arran and Abby's mom then I know you from Pet Forums!0 -
Obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.0

Just wanted to add that I feed my two Vizsla http://www.workinghprs.com/content/salmon-potato-30kg and I can't believe how well they have done on it in the couple of weeks especially the reduced output from the back end!! The interesting things is that i have been told that it is made by the same people who make Burns, Arden Grange, James Wellbeloved and loads of others. Some of the recipes he sells don't appear to be as good as this Salmon one ( I think he also does a grain free on which is Duck??)
Just wanted to add, my two were fed on BARF for years until one of them developed an allergy to lamb, the vet thinks some lamb protein got into the blood stream some how and he developed this allergy. Have to be so careful now. Also there is plenty of research to show that 1/3rd of raw fed dogs shed Salmonella in their faeces (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC339295/) so we would have had to stop anyway when our toddler came along. Landywoods supplied us on very reasonable terms (http://www.landywoods.co.uk/)
After the BARF we fed Fish4Dogs which was great but very expensive (>£50 for 12kg!!!) before a chap in the village told me about the Salmon and Potato they are both now on.
Cheers, hope someone finds that useful.
Mike and his two ginger dogs
Got an email back, they said they're not sure how much salmon meal is in there but have contacted GA to ask.
They also said they are going to be having GA make a food to their own grain recipe soon.
Seems they have great customer service. Which you can't buy.
I've also asked for a sample of the duck and potato just to see if my eldest dog is okay with it. I like to change occasionally, just to give the dogs something different so it would be nice to have another food he does well on.
But I stick by what I said about the salmon one.Sigless0
