    So would mine :p

They'll eat more or less anything though :o We try not to give too much tinned but they have it occasionally - they really really like the Butcher's Tripe ones :D

Is Butcher's tripe nutritionally ok? The breeder I'm getting my first dog from at Easter currently feeds him the tripe loaf plus some mixer biscuits. Does this sound ok, or should I ideally be switching him gradually to something 'better'?

Butchers isn't the best, it's better than pedigree etc but it's not great.

For decent wet foods have a look at nature diet, natures harvest, natures menu, and pets at homes wainwrights.

They are all sold in pets at home and often on offer. Nature diet is about £13 for 18 trays, wainwrights is £8 for 12 trays. Both 65%+ meat. And thats actual meat, not meat derivatives.

For anyone that wants to try Naturediet and can't get it locally, GJW Titmuss usually have an offer of 3 cases with free delivery. This is their current offer. First one on the page. Works out at 72p per tray. We have used them in the past, excellent service and quick delivery by courier.

Natures Harvest works out at 99p per tray if you buy the special offer of 4 cases with free delivery from Judges Choice. Not sure if it's the cheapest as we've not used them.

For those ordering off the internet, I alternate between GJW Titmuss and zooplus for JWB dry food, depending on which specific offers they have on at the time, so it's probably worth comparing for other brands as well. I get the larger bags which tends to put me into the free delivery range anyway. Plus you can use the cashback sites for both.

hi all after years of feeding my cats royal canin dried food which is fab,
i decided for our new pug pup to feed him on royal canin also.
don`t see much info on the thread about it,
we only got him at weekend and he was on harringtons,
i have now changed him to royal canin jnr small breed with no probs his poos are a lot firmer i`m going to stick with dry and odd raw meat as its always suited my cats and works out cheaper for me.
so my question is what do you guys think of royal canin?;)

Going back to the OP, mutt always has dry food, same brand and flavour. The lack of variety didn't seem to worry her, but I felt it was boring. So (until the colitis got bad and all extras were banned) I used to mix scraps off my plate into her food - not much usually, just enought to give it a taste.
Pasta, rice, potatos, gravy, veg, weetabix, curry, whatever was going, really. As long as I was careful with the salt and didn't put in things that were bad for her like onions, she seemed to appreciate all of it. As I say, only in very small amounts though, or if I put more carbs in I took some of her dry food out to balance it out.

IMO Royal Canin is SHICKINGLY overpriced for the ingredients.
Maize, dehydrated poultry meat, animal fats, rice, dehydrated pork protein, wheat flour, hydrolysed animal proteins, beet pulp, minerals, wheat gluten**, soya oil, fish oil, Fructo-Oligo-Saccharides (FOS), hydrolysed yeast (source of Manno-Oligo-Saccharides [MOS]), marigold extract (source of
    lutein).

First ingredient is maize, so that will be primarily what the food is made up of. But it doesn't say what % that is. Not does it give a percentage of meat (I got this info from RC's web site).

It has two other fillers and a list of stuff I've no idea what it is. and for £40 is for 10kg. Not a change I'd pay that for those ingredients. You can pay half that, feed skinners and get what is IMO a better food. Plus you'll get an extra 5kg of it too. Or the AG mini lamb and rice, or fish4dogs mini. All with better meat content and less fillers.

RC isn't the worst food, and if the dog is doing well, no reason to change. But it really is shocking value for cash.

  • I can recommend Burns and Naturediet trays. My Parson JRT was fed absolute cr*p by the previous owners when we first took him on, and suffered so many tummy upsets. But now has a fab shiny coat and doesn't have any tummy problems. He has the smaller size Burns mini-bites, and loves the lamb Naturdiet trays.

The only thing to be aware of is that the Naturdiet trays are all natural without preservatives, so you might find the occasional blown packet - but I've found that Naturediet are always happy to replace.

i mostly feed my little boy on dry kibble in the mornings (royal canin pug) and in the evening mix it in with mixed cooked veg and potato/bulgar wheat/cous cous and a little bit of hot water. He proper chows that down.

He gets fresh ham or chicken from the butcher's on a weekend. Bit indulgent, but not that expensive if you get the offcuts :)

Treats are usually very small, at the moment we're liking hill's science plan treats for immunity support, or he's more than happy to have a bit of veg as a treat.
  • When not feeding raw, I feed Orijen - expensive but I think worth it.
I have a dog who is intolerant of all grain, including rice, so find it extremely difficult to find a really good food thats suitable. It's amazing when you actually start reading the ingredient labels just what a load of rubbish there really is in some food.
Rule of thumb I was always told is to go for something where the first 2 out of 3 ingredients are a good protein source (meat or fish).

I haven't personally tried their food, but it does come highly recommended and tends to get very good reviews.
Good luck in the dog food minefield!!
