Can anyone tell me the best dry food to feed my young girlie then please? Are Bakers (and Pedigree) really not advisable?
Thanks again
Personally, I wouldn't feed Bakers as it has such a lot of colouring in it, can lead to hyperactivity.0 -

I belong to a pet forum and these dry foods come recommended by various members on there
Arden Grange, Burns, Fish4Dogs, James Wellbeloved, Wainwrights, Acana, Orijen, Barking Heads.
I have a friend with two pointers who feed Orijen after a lot of experimenting, suits her dogs perfectly but I believe it is more for high energy dogs as it's high in protein.0 -

Bakers is pretty much the Macdonalds of dog food. Full o crap and very, very little nutrition.
Decent dry food brands are Arden Grange, Simpsons, Skinners (either the duck and rice or salmon and rice), Wainwrights (pets at homes own brand - so can only buy there), orijen, arcana, taste of the wild, barking heads, fish4dogs.
Alot of people will say burns, but at almost £50 per bag for a food containing 60% rice - I can't recommend it, not when the skinners I mentioned have pretty much the same ingredients but are £20 per bag.
Rule of thumb is, if you can buy it in the super market - it's pants. Although I believe waitrose sell Arden Grange.Sigless0 -

Sorry but they're both rubbish and I'm being very very polite in just calling them that :rotfl:. They have loads of cereals in them and probably not named cereals, which means that they are buying the cheapest on the market at that time, animal derivatives which is all the stuff left over from the animal after it's been stripped for human use, think fur, hooves, bones, fur, beaks, claws ect., ec or eec permitted additives they could well be bha and bht which some experts think cause cancer and are banned in human food. If the food you want to feed has any of these things in them then you might want to re think it. As I've said I feed Orijen which is thought to be one of the best foods on the market, you could try Burns which isn't to bad a food and does seem to suit a lot of dogs.0 -

.
The reason I mentioned Burns is that it was the only food my last sheltie could tolerate as she had bad colitis, I also know of a few dogs who had bad skin conditions who were helped by it.0 -
I feed my dog autarky dried dog food with a little bit of from a chappie tin mixed in.
I researched before I decided on these. Autarky is £21 for a £15kg bag so great value and no rubbish in there either. Also chappie, even though it is cheap seemed to be one of the better ones on the wet food market. One small tin of chappie lasts 2 days.
My dog is in good condition and has a lovely coat and has firm stools.Smoke Free since 1 January 20130 -
Thank you everyone for all the advice - can't believe I've been a dog owner for 25 years (OMG!) and only with the new one really thought about what I'm feeding!
So next question, where's the best place to buy any of these better brands?
Thank you again0 -
Chicken carcasses. Pork ribs. Lamb ribs. Lambs heart. Lambs liver. Turkey necks.
Veg mush including raw fruit and veg, VitC, VitE, Apple Cider Vinegar, Garlic, Kelp, Alfalfa, some fish usually Mackerel.
Bakers complete in their kong with cheap paste.Trev. Having an out-of-money experience!
C'MON! Let's get this debt sorted!!0 -

In the past I have fed (with average to good results) Skinners/Wainwrights/Orijen/James Wellbeloved
I'm another one who would never feed Bakers/Pedigree/Iams etc.
I've fed all the above plus Judges Choice. All have been fine but vary hugely in price.
As mentioned before, I'm restricted in choice due to Mr B's wheat intollerance and was feeding Judges Choice but there delivery charges went up a lot so switched to Wainwrights.
However, this jumped in price (was around £25/bag when I started) and is now around £33.50/bag.
I spoke to the guy in my local pet shop and he recommended Skinners - Mr B loves it and it seems to suit him really well (and of similar quality to the others) - £23/bag (the difference mainly due to being VAT free).
Pop into your local pet shop and see if they keep it/can get it. It does also come in smaller bags (but obviously slightly more expensive) if you just want to try one.
If you do change, do it gradually over a few days so as not to upset mutt's tum!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
