I would love to feed barf but I hate handling raw meat.
I have no idea if a barf diet would be suitable for your dog so not recommending or anything, but since you said you'd like to feed her barf are you aware you can get pre made compete raw blocks?
Prize choice, natural instinct, darlings. They all make pre-made complete raw meals. All you have to do is keep it frozen, defrost and serve.
I used them when I fed raw, being veggie I didn't want to handle meat at all.Sigless0 -

I'm a veggie as well, I know about the ready meals and had thought about them. I tried them with a couple of raw meals and it was Abby my wee oldie who's ill that really liked them, Arran wasn't so fussy although he did eat them, the smell did make me feel ill though. I might wait until Abby is no longer with us which I hope is a long long way of yet and try again.0 -
I have a 7 year old Lab and an 18 month old Collie/Lab cross, they are fed BARF and they both love it, they are healthy and energetic. I feed them chicken carcasses, wings necks in the morning, raw meaty bones during the day and prize choice with grated veggies in the evening, sometimes they have tins of sardines or tuna in oil. They also love fruit, apples, pears, bananas etc. It costs me approx £50 a month for the two of them. Their poo is dry and not smelly.0

My vet was recommending what to feed my 18 week old pup and said Iams (amongst others) when I said I heard they do animal testing he said he felt they got an unfair bad press and all the animal testing involved was letting the animals taste the food! I'm not sure about this so could anyone enlighten me as to what Iams actually do?
Thanks
ps at the moment I am feeding her James Wellbeloved and Bakers puppy (alternating) as although I would love for money not to be an issue, unfortunately it isMy older dog (9 and a half) has always eaten Tesco own dry food and he's done fine so really what I'd like to know is what is the best food to feed her without having to spend a fortune!
Thanks again0 -

I had heard something about Iams and cruelty so I googled.

I haven't read them, I would get too upset if I did.
I'm in the process of changing my dog over to raw but still have some Naturediet and Burns mini bites to use up. She prefers the raw although does still eat the commercial, just doesn't hang around looking longingly for that as she does when I get the raw out!0 -

I think p&g now say they no longer test on animals but for a lot of us it's to little to late, the tests they did were barbaric and I hope the people who allowed them to happen rot.
Buying a cheaper food is a false economy as you need to feed more of it, my pair when they were both on Orijen were costing me about £3/4 a week to feed.0 -
Another BARF feeder here, we feed tripe and chicken pieces on the bone here (raw) along with some veg and raw eggs.
Good, firm, small poos (less junk in the food so less output) which is an achievmnet wth 3 Great Danes!2 angels in heaven :A0 -
Although I would like to feed my dog on raw meat, I would find it difficult to feed big raw bones as there is nowhere that he would be able to chew at them, he won't stay outside in the yard to chew them, just sits crying at the door to be let in and I wouldn't want him to have them in the house because of the mess and the smell.
As for chicken and rabbit bones, I think I would be frightened of him swallowing pieces and them getting stuck.
I don't have room in my freezer for the raw complete meals and nowhere to put another freezer.
I feed Harrington's, Arden Grange or Wagg premium which I supplement with half a tin of Butchers Tripe because my dog won't eat dried on its own. Often, I give mince, chicken etc instead of the Butchers, he also has tinned sardines in sunflower oil on a regular basis for his coat and because he loves them.
I know that a raw diet is suposed to be a lot better for them as it is more natural.0 -
Thanks for the links, that is horrific reading
Can anyone tell me the best dry food to feed my young girlie then please? Are Bakers (and Pedigree) really not advisable?
Thanks again0 -
Although I have never fed them, Bakers and Pedigree are really meant to be poor quality foods, full of fillers and lots of other things that dogs really do not need.
In the past I have fed (with average to good results) Skinners/Wainwrights/Orijen/James Wellbeloved
Hopefully someome who currently feeds dried can advise better.2 angels in heaven :A0
