Yorkshirelass my dd is ten and has also stopped believing in father christmas its so sad. We have nothing to bribe her with now, lol.
  • Happy Christmas everyone

I haven't posted in weeks, but I do keep up with the thread, it is how I reward myself at the end of the day :D

On the house front somethings are how I was hoping to get them, others are very close and other parts have gone backward. Hey ho, now we are just working at maintainance and damage limitation whilst our guests are here ( 8 days) then a few days relaxing with the family until after epiphany when I'll try and demess the house.

Brilliant to hear from you all, I saved myself this `treat` for today, reading all your posts properly. As JPS said "lovely to see all the OLD MESSY REGULARS posting" - that`s a lovely phrase JPS!
Whether you all got your place tidy, partially tidy, or just settled for domestic chaos & a few decs, I just hope you all enjoyed your Christmas. I certainly did, believe it or not!
Christmas Eve (long-day) was MANIC on our ward - several folks discharged just in time to be home for Christmas, which meant loads of last-minute liasing with pharmacy/carers/ & in some cases District nurses (all in different areas of course!) The phones & fax machine were red-hot, and no ward clerk there. Also lots of last-minute queries about our Christmas visiting hours (open), and ordering extra dinners for some patients spouses who were going to stay.
Of course, as soon as we have an empty bed...we have a new patient in it!!
Buffy, it seems so extra hard when a person`s loved one is taken seriously ill, or dies, bad enough for them anytime but somehow it being Christmas makes it seem even worse, harder to take in. Poorlies` family & visitors also need a bit of extra TLC at this time, so we had that to add to the mix in the last couple of days.
    On a lighter note...
One lady`s husband who spent the whole day with her on the ward said it was the best Christmas they`d had in the last decade!
One normally `picky` wife who spent the day with us to be with her hubby said she`d been dreading it but had really had a lovely day - AND had a new insight into what we do, (never stop, etc.,) which she hadn`t realised before when she was just coming at regular visiting times..
Best bit? That`s easy. A little frail old lady who has to be coaxed with every spoonful she swallows, and coaxed at every time we have to change & reposition her, hardly ever has a visitor, etc... a niece had visited on Christmas Eve, with a couple of parcels - a couple of new pretty nighties and a small bottle of whiskey.
The junior Dr.on call yesterday was one of our consultant`s team, so knew the patient, and was able to add a tot of whiskey to her prescription. (we couldn`t give her any otherwise) There was my little lady in a pretty nightie, supping milky coffee with 15 ml of whiskey, spoonful by spoonful, and savouring every last drop! I got a lovely gummy smile and a burp...absolutely made my day!! (Other folks` babies don`t make me all broody, but puppies & old ladies like this one do!!)
    Enough shop -
I got home last night by 9pm - night staff came in 20 minutes earlier for handover, it`s traditional. I threw the Turkey in the oven, made a fire in LR, and we watched DR Who (brilliant!) on i-player. accompanied by a nice box of red wine. Then checked turkey, rinsed/topped tailed/cut parsnips, and cut spuds threw the lot in steamer (no peeling) to part cook before roasting. Then watched Doc Martin on i-player (& more wine), and Agatha Christie`s Chimneys on utube. During the adverts and various pauses when OH went to loo I mixed bread sauce, and madeira wine gravy (both packet stuff) and plucked sprouts off stalk, rinsed. Topped/tailed carrots, took parsnips & spuds out of steamer, put carrots & sprouts in it, & a tin of cooked chestnuts in rice dish in top layer of steamer. Took turkey out of oven, put in spuds & parsnips, thickened bread sauce & gravy. Had some more wine.
At 1 am today we had Christmas dinner, on lap trays watching telly. Lovely!!
    Pigged out & tipsy.
Lie-in this morning. Lots of leftovers so just heating-up today.
Now have 3 days off, so a bit of a tidy, change LR rugs & put new ones down, more wine this evening & Downton on i-player. Slob-out time.
    Am purring quietly...
    Happy (((HUGS))) to all x.

Wow, haven't we all been busy little bees? Hope everyone had a lovely christmas in whatever state of messiness they found themselves. As for me, well completely failed to take my own advice! I'd left myself 3 days to get ready - loads of time as not many jobs. Then ended up spending all saturday and most of sunday helping OH with his project which squished the plan into an impossibly short space. Got to the supermarket an hour before it shut on Sunday - luckily not toooo busy (I remember times when you'd be queueing for over an hour at the tills at christmas). Home to bake the cookies that were presents needing delivering on xmas eve. Somehow up late xmas eve so started wrapping presents at the time I was supposed to leave the house (OH helped bless him) and was 45 min late for lunch. Ended up giving lifts and visiting grandparents in the most illogical order which meant more time in the car than spent visiting which was a shame and then home to bake the mince pies that I'd promised my mum for xmas morning. Only wrote cards for the neighbours around 6pm on xmas eve and then sent OH out to deliver them so i could "wrap" his presents - ran out of time so they were simply coralled under my dressing gown on the bed! Finally got them wrapped for him at 11pm!

As I couldn't work out how to wrap the jar of pickled eggs, I gave them to him there and then, which set us off opening all our presents before midnight. Naughty us! Good job we don't have kids! OH loves his pickled eggs so thanks for the idea Emm.

Christmas day itself was pretty dull and we're off to my ma's this afternoon. De-messying starts properly tomorrow - hopefully I'll have time then.

YL - I went out on Saturday with some school friends and there was one girl that I've not seen for years who arrived quite late. She totally changed the atmosphere of the group and I realised a) why I'd not seen her for a while and b) why I stopped seeing the "group". Sometimes it just takes one person and the way everyone else reacts changes and you feel like an outsider. Don't let yourself drift away from all your friends but perhaps see them in smaller groups if that makes you feel comfortable. If you find you don't like any of them any more, don't keep punishing yourself. Sometimes you do grow out of friendships.
  • Oh Emm, what a lovely story about your old lady. I would never have the patience to do your job so I am full of admiration. I guess these little moments are what keeps you going when patients are being a pain in the backside!!!

Well secretly I am a little glad yesterday went well and is over and done with. A combination of elderly relatives, hyped up kids, teenagers separated from their bedrooms, too much chocolate and alcohol - and a overexcited dog. Well it could have been much worse. I have to say getting home, putting on the new pjs and dressing gown and settling down with some wine, choccies, my hubby and the telly was the best bit of the day for me.

So I hope it went well for everyone else. Now relaxing and enjoying some chilled out time together. The kids have just surprised me by getting dressed and going outside to play footie, I didnt think they would appear out of their bedrooms today! Off to walk the dog soon.

Enjoy the rest of the bank holiday everyone x

    Evening Messies.

Emms, I just loved your story about the little old lady. I've a picture in my head of her supping her whiskied coffee, and SO wish I could draw! :):) Well done to you and your fellow staff for all the work you do at a time when most of us are at home, nejoying peace and quiet. I know you love your work, but even so, well done. :T

Sonastin, sometimes, no matter how carefully we plan, the plans seem to believe otherwise. :rotfl: Sorry, I know I shouldn't laugh, cos it must have all been so frustrating for you, but ti sounds as if all came good in the end, even if not quite how you intended. I hope you and your OH had a good, and more peaceful, day today.

YL, your Christmas Day sounds just a bit chaotic, but it sounds as if you coped ok, even if you're relieved it's all over.

We had a buffet supper on Christmas Eve, Snookey - it's become a bit of a tradition in our family. It sounds as if you had a pleasant day, at least.

Well, after all the clearing (and a bit of cleaning) chez Bearcub, our place is a bit of a tip. As I've said before, our bungalow is small. We have DD1 here, so that inevitably means a large holdall, presents (first to bring over, then to take back), and her daylight lamp. It also means a duvet and pillow, as she prefers to sleep on the sofa, rather than the futon in the spare room. And, the present unwrapping has produced a lot of extra toys for the cats, mostly wrapping paper, but also a couple of gift tags and ribbon. Hilarious to watch, and completely worth all the extra mess. At least it's clean mess! We, too, had a quiet day, playing the odd silly game, and watching seemingly endless 'animated films'. Had a call from DD2, who's developed a nasty cold since we saw her on Sunday, and had hardly any voice. She was at her bf's brother's house, where his mum is also living atm. Despite seeing DD2 just last week, I miss her being here for Christmas :( although, tbh, until last Christmas, we'd not had her with us for 10 years. Still, she has to share time between us and her bf's mum, it's only fair.
