Hi McCulloch29 *waves* I might be able to explain the cat :)

Does your friend have a pill giver? It pops the pill far enough back in the mouth that they swallow the pill much more easily. If the cat is spitting the tablet back out, she could try holding the cat's mouth shut till it licks its lips (as its a reflex after swallowing).

For the peeing, its probably that the arthritis is causing sufficient pain that the cat just can't face jumping down, going to pee, returning and jumping back up. Hopefully the pills get into the cat daily will help with this :) and definately avoiding bleach for cleaning previous *accidents* they adore peeing on bleach :s

Snookey, glad to hear your dog seems to be calming down - though my late dear old boy (German Shep x Bouvier, looked like a black Old English but with pointy fringed ears) never did calm down till he did it terminally! Still sadly missed. Glad your DD`s dental prognosis is ok, know the `guilty-ridden` thing...these days it seems to be down to me to have to nag DGD about brushing teeth,(AND HAIR!) DS doesn`t want to be the `nag`, & the mama much more `laisez-faire` than required. (That from ME, she who can be so `laid-back` It`s a wonder I don`t fall over!)
Re `normal animals` - we never had one of those! But, last night after we got home from the pub , I did make a small fire, it was quite nippy & even a small fire gives a cheer to the room...but, both Daftie-dog & the Mad Moggie were just SO chilled, both just lying there so relaxed they looked like they`d been filleted. MM didn`t want to go out persecuting small furry things, Daftie-dog wasn`t looking for patches of herself or rug to lick, or sniffing about what we were eating. It was like the very Ancient Peace of creatures settled around a fire, LR could have been a cave just like a Kipling story....warmth, safety, comfort, food & shelter. We counted our Blessings, the animals just did it their way - so I just lit another fire in the hearth now. Making a green Thai effort now, and about to watch Richard II on i-player. (I don`t understand tennis)
    Goodnight all.xx

Dragonette and Bearcub, thank you. I didn't know there was such a thing as a pill-giver. I may well get one on Amazon and get it sent to him.

She is a very strange cat, but I think being in pain for most of her life explains a lot. I've seen her bristle, swishing her tail with fury at the presence of strangers -not me, she got to know me.

But she has also nuzzled up to me with pure love, and to others as well. Even her owner at rare times.
The peeing.... His son now owns a cat, and she was originally the son's pet, but he left home and it wouldn't have been fair to relocate her. So it could be that.
It could well be that she has just decided that jumping down is too much for her, the floors are solid wood so a landing must hurt. I know that animals like the same spot to urinate so that fits in too.

Hi the cat sounds distressed over something. Our cats always dirty when distressed. It maybe pain or it could be that she is getting confused or it could be a water infection. Id suggest getting a vet to look at her first.
I thought it an apt description Emm regards the animals looking as if they have been filleted. Made me laugh.
Iv been for a lay down thinking my ears would clear, they feel as if Im under water ,but no its worse. Any suggestions to clear them.
Oh quick tip for cleaning cat pee, cup full of soap powder,a glug of white vinegar added to litre of water. If possible move the chair outside to dry in the sun if there is any.

McCulloch, I agree there could be a urine infection that might need checked. My mum is a vet and the first symptom of arthritis is cats not jumping as much. From what you say, it does sound like she's been a fair amount of pain, maybe the arthritis is making the pain high enoughthat she just doesn't want to move? Its def how I feel when my joints are bad :)

We've not had many 'normal' animals, either, Emms. One of our first cats used to swear silently at us, if we told her she had to go out. The elderly lady we have now, is totally obsessed with OH, and yowls horrendously when he goes out of the door. Despite being nearly 20, after her treat of chicken this evening, she sped around the lounge like a kitten! Our pony is a sweetie and as 'normal' as any equine can be, but the horse is a 26 year old loveable hooligan, who smacks his lips for treats! :):)

McCulloch, female cats are often a lot moodier than males. Being snipped usually makes male cats soppy, but the female op doesn't have the same effect. Our elderly girl has always been a purrer but, push your luck, and she'd have you with teeth or claws! Now, though, it's all too much effort.

Emm, I love when the beasts are so calm and happy round a fire, makes me wish I still had an open fire!

I wondered about a water infection too, but the vet has checked her over. I've just found a pill-giver on the Net with a five star review, for the princely sum of £1.40, so it's been dispatched to my friend. There are cat treats that can be used to hide pills in but these are really pricey.

    Hi all :hello:

    Wow...you're putting me to shame.

*However*, the carpet fitter came today, and I now have a nice new, replastered, decorated, recarpeted ex toy room. I've bought an armchair (Ebay), which rather miraculously fitted into the back of my Yaris :p. My friend's painting and an expensive print I put away when the children were small (it wasn't just the price tag that was scary) can go on the walls...and that will be a long job finished!! :T

As for this weekend...I did nothing at home. I was in Paris :D. I took DD and DS as a HUGE treat to see the Tim Burton exhibition. Not massively my sort of thing (DD was in raptures, though, which is what mattered), but the exposition was in the Cinematheque Francaise, which also has original props from Journey to the Moon and Metropolis...cue utter geeky bliss :rotfl:

Next job...all the crud that has appeared/been dumped in the study-the one I posted pictures of looking *immaculate* six months ago-while the toy room has been soaking up all my energy. Sigh. Fortunately, the work thing is cancelled. Well....it's cancelled here :p. A long standing member of staff who is retiring really wants the "do" at her place and...cough...who am I to argue?????

Mcculloch-when my Sam started to get arthritis, a colleague told me about the near-miraculous effect a Bioflow collar had had on her cat. I admit I was sceptical, and the collars certainly aren't cheap, but no pet treatment is. Anyway, I bought one, and I do believe it helped. He loosened up immediately, and didn't stiffen much more for the rest of his life. My colleague's experience-with a cat with severe arthritis-was dramatic; her pain-riddled cat became able to jump up onto and down from the sofa within 24 hours. She believes it bought the cat another three years of life. I'd certainly try one on an animal again.

    Morning messies!

Haven't done anything yet except cook and scoff a big breakfast, just wanted to post before 7am :D:D:D

laurel, lucky you going to Paris! My DDs would have loved that exhibition too I think :) Glad you've got your room sorted, must be lovely! That's one thing about tidying, makes you realise how desperately the carpets need cleaned - and the walls painted - etc etc:o Oh well, that'll have to wait!

Going to finish my coffee and go and do the rest of my bedroom , I bought one of those tall very thin shelving units from the charity shop yesterday which will hold all the CDs I've kept plus some DVDs and books. It was too wet yesterday to bring it home (we're carrying it, the shop is just around the corner) so I have to clear the space it's going in then get it picked up today :)

Head still feels blocked up and scratchy throat, don't know whether to pick up that First Defence spray when I go to the chemist for our prescriptions?? I know it's expensive but I really don't need one of my monster colds this week!

Have a good day everyone :) xx
