  • what a great idea for a thread Rosie... *gets her pen and notepad out*

i could do with all the hints and tips i can get.... i seem to flap about all week after work -without any great achievement - then spend my weekend cleaning the house from top to bottom.
Not ideal when your working all week - last thing you want to be doing is the housework on your days off.

I'll try to think of any tips I can contribute... might be hard as i could be classed as the queen of messy

In the advert break from Corrie (or whatever you like watching) get up and do something quick. I usually run the sink full of hot soapy water then in the next break I do the glasses and mugs and so on...This to be fair is when my motivation is at an all time low but it stops me doing nothing at all!

Other quick things I do in advert breaks:

    -put a few things away
    -put a wash on
-check fridge for what needs eating next
    -change bedding (2 breaks)
    -hoover a small space

I like this thread! I am such a messie!

My tip is for when you have it unde control......run around for five or ten minutes before bed so the sitting room/ living room and kitchen are back to 'ok'. Coming down to lots of stuff needing doing is depresing and de motivating. Keeping things looking ordered is less daunting and makes it eaier to clean when you nee to.

I am naturally very messy, and unless i do this things decend into depressing panamonium very quickly. Through the day things get messy, but i can rectify to an ok level quickly if someone knocks at the door by following this.

I think it's a case of whatever works for you.

Do you know, I got the Flylady app on my phone (Android) and ended up buying it. I thought it was free at first but then it expired  but anyway, I ended up buying it!

It's fab for me because it's a bit at a time. I've actually found myself doing more than it tells me to because I've caught up a bit!

It's worth a look for free, to see if it works for you. If you're into that sort of thing!

But my first step is to get my kids to recognise their clothes are mucky in the first place (and their Dad - he quite happily takes them shopping in dinner stained tshirts..) They're 5 and nearly 7, and to be honest I'm starting to worry they may never be typical ladies! :rotfl:

ps has anyone else ever wondered why we have washer and dryers downstairs (even in basements!) when our clothes are usually kept upstairs? It's a lot of up and down-ness, isn't it?

The only downside to getting them put in the bathroom or similar upstairs is the noise I guess? And I suppose for line drying.. Ah yes. That probably answers that one.

I agree with OP about flylady being a bit scary. I've looked at it, and then realised that it's something else to get behind on!

The bit about odd socks reminded me - I have a little basket and when I'm sorting clean laundry any socks without mates go into the odd sock basket. Their partner often comes through in the next batch of laundry (sometimes having escaped from its hiding place under a 6 year old's bed!). Every so often, I go through the basket and usually find pairs for most of them in the end.

I did once buy some little sock clips which were supposed to keep them in pairs through the laundry, but after the first couple of times, they stopped being used.

I also have a cloth bag for this, and many do find their mates but it doesn't explain the little b***ers that go in the machine in pairs and come out as onesomes:rotfl:

    good thread Rosie :)

I like the tip about taking something out a room when you leave it, and did follow it faithfully for a few days - need to get back in the groove with that one! Another one I liked - for far gone Messies like me - was to start with the hall so that you can at least open your front door to callers even if you can't invite them in - though "start" implies that you're going to do something else afterwards...erm...:o

I used to have an odd sock basket too, but the basket vanished and now it's just odd sock piles - one on my bedroom floor and one in a corner of the kitchen:o though i swear one day I'm going to bin every black sock because they all have different tops and are far from a uniform shade of black:mad:
