My home is a mess

Sorry if post in wrong place, but my kitchen is doing my head in!

We have a large iss kitchen dinner but seem to have no room, have tried to clear work surface but do not have cupboards to put the stuff in!

How many cupboards do I need in a kitchen?

At mo I have 1 double wall cupboard that has food-tins etc in, a 600 unit with plates, bowls etc, a 600 with glasses in and baking stuff, a 3 drawer unit, a under counter corner unit with baking trays, jugs, mixing bowls etc and a cupboard under the sink with cleaning stuff in.

I need a new kitchen as this one is literally falling in bits, but will have to make do for now.

I have tried emptying all stuff out, but ended in tears last time!

I have a toaster, kettle, tea, coffee, sugar pot, mug tree at the side of the sink. Slow cooker and George grill at other side, then my cooker and then microwave at other side with actuary on top. This does not leave much work surface.

    Any ideas?

Your Kitchen sounds like mine - its soul destroting to keep having to face the mess!! my advice would be to take 1 cupboard at a time when you are on your own and be very ruthless with what is in it!! Do you have any wall space where you could put some cheap shelves up or could you use the top of the cupboards - I have seldom used items on top of my cupboards [the space above the cupboard] and I store picnic bags, flasks etc up there, they are all bagged so they don't get dirty - not the best solution but it does free up cupboard space. I also have my mugs on a bar that is fixed to the underneath of a cupboard, it has hanging hooks for the cups - cheap in Ikea

Keep on trying to tidy but do small steps rather than the whole room - its too much to expect to be sorted in 1 go - be kind to yourself

Hope that helps - others will be along to offer other suggestions that may be of use to you

    Hello and welcome!

We have all been in your position at some time or another (many of us still are :rotfl:). I agree with other posters that you have to tackle one area at a time and be completely ruthless. Also think of other areas that you can store things like the top of cupboards, which is where I keep my appliances that I do not use frequently. I also have hooks for hanging things and if I had the space I would have shelves for things.

Try not to think of tackling the kitchen as a whole but just focus on a cupboard or drawer and do a bit every so often. I have done all my drawers and the top cupboards but I still have the bottom ones to face . Doing it bit by bit has stopped me feeling overwhelmed.

Today I will not be doing anything as we will soon be leaving for a family day out at the wildlife park :D

Crockpot sort out those things that you use most and pack or give away. Have a look at the cups do you have more than you need. I got rid of lots of cups that just gathered dust as we used the same ones. Dishes how many do you have can you get rid of some. Have a look at your pans and oven trays do you need all of them. You can use your oven to store your baking trays after all you will use them daily.
Have a look at the containers that you store food in. Is there a better way ie plastic containers that can be stacked on top of each other. I put cereal into containers on top of my freezer. Buy stands that you can store under and on top as this will double your worktop and cupboard space. Baskets on top of your wall cupboards could be used to store things.
  • Evening everyone

Have had a very unproductive weekend but nice to have a rest. Was feeling a bit off it yesterday and just lazed about which seems to have done me some good. Have lots of things on the to do list this week and DS is feeling poorly so it looks like we are going to be at home quite a bit.

    Jobs to do:
Clean out coal shed ready for coal delivery (shudders at thought of spiders)
    Rubbish to tip
Give car a good clean inside and out
Get up to date on washing and ironing
    Paint doors in kitchen
    Mouldy bathroom ceiling to paint
    Kitchen rug to wash
Garden to tidy - dead bedding plants to bin

Crockpot - I sympathise. I also have a big open plan kitchen/diner but never seem to have enough cupboard space. One of the jobs on my to do list is to properly clean inside my kitchen cupboards but I keep putting it off. The problem is that if your worksurfaces have lots of things on them it makes cleaning so much harder. I guess the only way to do it is to be really ruthless and just get rid of some pots and pans. Let me know if you find a solution!

Oh well, better go and see what the kids are doing. DS2 is still in a bit of a grump because he wanted to buy an 18 certificate XBox game this afternoon (he is 10) and we said no. I am glad OH was with me and backed me up because he can be a bit more lenient about things like this sometimes.
  • Evening all

My kitchen looks like a hoard of teenagers has attacked it, they have then moved to the Living Room and spent the weekend in there!!! I'm thoroughly disgusted with the downstairs of this house. On the plus side we have had a lovely weekend, kiddies spent the day at their Dad's yesterday and DH and I went to the Lottie and today we all had abit of shopping to do and then DD and I went to the Lottie. We've all been busy over the last 2 days and its showing - yuck. I shall clear the Kitchen now cos tomorrow DH and I are back at the Lottiefor the day - roll on Tuesday when normal hours are resumed

Hope you have all had a nice weekend - hugs Yorkshirelass - hope you are feeling better and that DS is getting better too

  • Flylady help you with this problem, try to look at it and you will get motivated, I personally take their suggestions, and it helped me a lot.
  • Hi all. Still haven`t read/caught up here, sorry.( Still haven`t properly finished unpacking after hols, unless you call an empty case and a heap of folded stuff on bedroom desk unpacking) First opportunity to post again (am calling this `my time`) after two 13 hour shifts, the menfolk fed & gone bye-byes. Now have 2 days off, hence up late - too knackered to eat supper & go to bed yet, head still racing with lot of stuff from work today. You lot are my antidote, Bless you all!
Water Board are doing `air scouring` tomorrow so water will be brown, unusable 9-5 says the letter. GREAT! Have filled receptacles for use in the day as instructed. Could stay up and have shower (hair like greasy rat tails, but feel really physically drained & CBA. ) Could put WM on tonight, but OH has to be up at 6am, WM is too noisy, kitchen is under bedroom.

OK, get a grip...I WILL reflect on the positive...(not the work bit, that`s another saga still buzzing in brain, good stuff, and other stuff I`ll phone in and discuss tomorrow. Home matters now, I have a Life!)
    9.30pm, entered kitchen/bombsite.
Cleared/cleaned sufficient worktop area (JUST) & chopped savoy cabbage, into steamer, needy to use bacon under grill, sausages in oven. Floor like a swamp - stepped over dog and tipped her water bowl over, said O! DEAR!, or words to that effect, then reassured dog it wasn`t her fault, fair do`s she was only glad to see me home. Paddled about with dog (CBA mopping up at that stage) between fridge cooker & worktop. Chopped mushrooms, tipped half-steamed cabbage into pan, cut up bacon mixed it into cabbage & small lump of butter and left it to sweat. Sat down for 20 minutes in which I smoked x3 and briefly described my day to OH - who tried sweetly to listen with one eye on clock wanting his supper and pillow asap. Sausages hauled out of oven, under grill to brown, mushrooms dry-fried and eggs in other fry-pan, eggs on top of the cabbage/bacon. OH very complimentary about his supper, cleared plate & went to bed. DS appeared, made doorstep butties from his portion, & went off happy. I`m happy with that, it was a bit like what battlefield catering must be. Mine still sitting there, I`ll run out of steam soon and be hungry and eat/sleep with the dog tonight/lie in in the morning. The swamp has evaporated, the rest of the mess awaits me when I get up. Unless the Pixies come and deal with it, I will.
Am hungry now, actually, just went to warm my cabbage/bacon. No Pixies yet.
    Goodnight all, God Bless.

I have discovered talking books! Stick a disc into the cd player and carry it round with me when doing "stuff". I have found that i am so keen to hear what happens next that i am doing more "stuff" in order to listen.

Having said that, certain rooms are a bomb site but with OH and DD away till Thursday, i am hoping all will be neat and tidy when they return. Hopefully me and DS won't undo all the good before then!
I wanna be in the room where it happens
