I must be one of the few under-30s who loves her cheque book. It's great for keeping track of what's going out, and it means I don't need to carry as much cash on me for things like the veg delivery from the farmer, work being done in my flat, stuff like that. It's good for paying stuff like my Factor bill as well, seeing as they don't accept any other form of payment
I think it's great for smaller purchases on eBay, too, especially when they're purchases from me.And where sellers accept cheques, I always ask after getting the invoice how they would prefer payment, as I very rarely buy anything that costs more than a tenner.
I don't tend to carry my cheque book around with me though, so don't use it that often in shops. Unless it's the supermarket two days before payday :rolleyes:I joined the 21k debt free in 2 years head to head challenge 12 December 06

The last 2 things I needed my chequebook for were taxing the car & paying the annual ground rent & buildings insuance on my house. Now that the car tax can be done online with a debit card the chequebook will only be used once a year.
Its hard to believe that 12 years ago I left Lloyds bank because they wouldn't renew my cheque book.0 -
I still use mine for shopping. Oh and the catalogue bill. I use to be terrible and live off mine, until I kept getting bank charges because there wasn't enough money in my account. Learnt my lesson there .:A Tomorrow's just another day - keep smiling0

I use it to pay for school dinners as they never give receipts and the amount of times i have had to prove i have paid its untrue, the last time they sent me a reminder for 40p ????? how i allways pay for the full week.
Other than that i use them when sending money through the post, i used to pay nursery fees with them too as they don't take cards, but my youngest started school in jan so no need for that now0 -
I use them occasionally.
For some things on eBay (mostly I use PayPal if it's offered), or when I get the car serviced (small garage only takes cash or cheque).
A cheque book now lasts me ages and ages....
I never bring it out with me though, if out shopping will usually use my cashback credit card.Retired in 2015.

I still have a cheque book but hardly ever use it.
Used 2 cheques last year.
One for Ebay and one for paying a Solicitor. I find online bank transfers more easier these days and most people do not mind giving you there details.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 297 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts0 -
I haven't used my cheque book for a while since starting this thread, Ihave been very good, budgeting my shopping and paying cash.
I think when the kids start school I will need it for dinners e.t.c but I don't use ebay and stuff as I only have use of the work computer.
but my conclusion is=chequebooks are still very useful-so those shops deciding not to accept them need to get the finger out! lol:p :rolleyes:official dfw nerd club member no 214

Why is a person that handles your money called a broker?!0 -
I would miss having a cheque book even though I only use it occasionally. I pay work done on the house and sending for goods advertised in magazines (not many now I'm an MSE-er!). I don't like filling out my debit or credit card numbers out in full in forms that anyone can see when they process the order." The greatest wealth is to live content with little."

As for shops not accepting them I never had a view one way or the other until I worked as a temp over xmas at Tesco.
Cheques seem to take so much more time and I had a disater where the machine chewed up this guys cheque and had to call for assistance.
The answer to the technical problem seemed to involve one of the managers hitting the machine repeatedly until it spat it out lol
I got myself into trouble by getting a fit of the giggles and telling everyone inline "how very good the technical staff are a tesco".
Still makes me chuckle thinking about it.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 297 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts0 -
I had a massive collection of cheque books so when I cleared up my act with sorting out our filing cabinet I shreaded them all (took ages). Not sure Ive ever used a cheque in my life.
It would worry me to as Im always living on the financial edge not to have the money go straight away.Tax 2006 -£1849.20
