do you still use cheque books?

Options
I know it's seems a silly post but I thought I would ask as whenever I go shopping and pay with a cheque I get such funny looks off the sales assistant!
I think I must be the only person left who pays with cheques?!:o
I admit that this could be a bad thing to do as I sometimes use a cheque on a Tues when I don't get money until a Fri so basically i'm spending money I haven't got:naughty: :shhh: (mainly for emergencies, e.g. ran out of nappies)
But I also find them handy for paying bills rather than cash (where I cant pay with card) as then I have proof of my payment.
Does anyone else still use cheque books?
pros and cons?

  • Still have a cheque book. Only use it for:

eBay when seller doesn't accept paypal.
    Birthday gifts (eg £10 cheque)
And anything where I can't pay with credit card and don't like to take lots of cash (eg car repairs)

Think that's it. Never use it in shops
  • i do my weekly shop in tesco with a cheque and i much prefer it like you i tend to use it before payday but they are so slow at taking the money out of the bank i find it easier to budget especially as there are 8 of us and some weeks we have more money than others i dont use it for anything else though

    I still use cheques occasionally.

Shop assistants are often very un-used to them these days and I find that they sometimes try to give my cheque back with my card. Its a good job I'm honest!!

I work in retail and we only tend to see cheques towards the end of the month and this time of year. Which is probably a sign of people spending what they haven't got.

I have a cheque book but hardly ever use it, it's generally things that are sent off by post.

I find it can be hard to keep track of which cheque went where, as bank statements only read "Cheque - 10006" or similar. If you use debit card then it shows exactly where you spend the money
No longer using this account for new posts from 2013
  • My bf tried to use a cheque to pay for a hotel last year - his wages were paid into his account that day with a cheque so the funds weren't going to be available for a few days, and the cash he did have was our spends (was supposed to be a romantic break). However, after driving all day to get there, the woman did some kind of check on the cheque and informed us that they couldn't accept it. Basically, they did something like a debit transaction and obviously the money wasn't available... he ended up pleading with the dragon on reception, and persuading her to let his mother to pay for the room on her CC over the phone (against their policy). Was a nightmare.

My new bank account doesn't have a cheque book - if I haven't got it, I can't spend it :)
Although I do miss it for sending off payments for bills etc. I would have sent token payments to my creditors instead of waiting for them to call.

I use cheques for paying bills that are not on DD, for example, my semi annual rent. I also use them for paying for work things so that I can claim back the expenses and pay them in before it clears.
I used to work in a shop so I understand where in_over_my_head is coming from, anything over the guarantee of the cheque card would be phoned through for authorisation. As any ebayyer will know a cheque can be cancelled, even once it shows up in their account....

  • I use cheques! Whenever and wherever possible!
I need to keep my overdraft as low as possible (ha ha, look at it now....pffffffffffffff) and also juggle money, so paying by cheque and relying on slow cashing of cheques works well for me.

I'l be gutted when/if they introduce this new fast clearing of cheque malarkey! (Or do away with them altogether.)
