I use mine for ebay purchases where they offer it as a payment they accept, also for paying for school trips, payments for applications such as driving license etc. I too have used it where we have run out of food a few days before payday to pay for shopping, but i havent done that for a long time and don't think i will ever do it because 1) asda will stop taking them soon and 2) many places are using transax to authorise the cheque and to make sure you have sufficient funds in your account, which makes no sense as i could have the money in the account and as soon as the cheque is accepted, take out the whole lot. On the plus side its good because it will stop the toerags who steal chequebooks and cards and go on a spending spree, because when the assistant calls transax they will say its been reported stolen and will call the police from their end while keeping the assistant on the phone to avoid suspicion. Anyway, I thought that payment was guaranteed by a cheque g'tee card?

I just remembered - my hubby used one in the Disney store the other day, and the girl had never had to put one through although she'd worked there for a month!

I pay for all my credit card bills with cheques! How outdated am I?! I know they say its the worst way to pay as they can go lost but so far *touch wood* I've never had a problem. I really should manage my accounts online!

I still use cheques to pay for school things, organic veg delivery, milk man and swimming lessons. I don't know if I could manage without a cheque book although I do use a lot less of them. Online banking makes most things so easy to pay for. I haven't used them in shops for a very long time.

  • I still use chques in preference to a debit card for the following reasons.

    1. Cheques usually take longer to clear than debit card transactions so the money stays in your account longer. Useful if you have an interest paying account.

    2. Assuming you fill out the stub you have a bound record of your transactions. This is not as easy to lose as individual debit card slips.

    3. If you are returning an item bought with a cheque you do not need to present a debit card for a refund. Particularly useful when returning something on behalf of your partner, or vice versa.

    4. Shops occasionally fail to present cheques so the money is never debited from your account. Until, of course your remind them!

Lastly, the best thing about using cheques is listening to the collective groan of other shoppers as I produce my cheque book and fill out my cheque in best copperplate script using my quill pen, before handing it to the cashier, having made sure the ink is completely dry!

Go on write a cheque today,
    Andrew

I run a small business and only accept chq's or cash - the bank wants to charge too much comms on a debit/credit card machine. We let everyone know who is coming thats all we accept. At worse there is a mini bank 5 mins walk away so we send them off there if they need more money.

I've written 16 cheques since 10 Nov. Mostly paying bills by post, I also use them for school trips. And I wrote one to the Post Office when I had a lot of parcels to post.

I prefer them to paying by debit card as it feels much more memorable and you have a record of what you've paid

I had to order a new cheque book to send an initial deposit on my new savings account, I last used one previously in 2004.
