  • Hey compers,

Just wondered if some of you could offer some advice please. I recently entered my first (and last - it's a dark world!) voting competition.

A lot of my friends & family have helped me out and am not doing too badly, am currently 4th. However the top 3 are significantly in front, so much so I wondered what their secret was. And this is where I discovered the 'dark' world of voting comps and people 'cheating' as such by 'exchanging' votes with other people also needing votes in other comps. There are various websites and facebook groups as am sure a lot of you already know.

Obviously this is greatly unfair. Breaking T&C? Am not sure if the promotor hasn't mentioned it, would it be? - I don't know? But what I am sure of is that the people voting are ALL over the world! T&C states UK residency. Now, does this make these votes invalid? Is there anyway they can find check? Only name & email were specified so I'm guessing the answer is a big fat NO.

So, I'm left with a dilema - do I bring this to the promotor's attention? Surely these 'cheats' should not be allowed to win? I'll be honest, I would still only have a slim chance of winning if they did. There are a number of people behind me and could easily pip me to the post. But I really wouldn't mind, if they had done it the 'honest' way (an ambigious clause I know, as we are all 'begging' for votes as such)

If it were you, what would YOU do? Cut your losses, move onto the next one? Or would you get in contact? I don't know what outcome there would be - don't know if the promotor would even be interested? They've got their promotion out to the masses, whoever they may be!

I'll be honest, I won't be bothering with these sorts of comps anymore - skill based ones that you are JUDGED on are fair and people win on merit. And perhaps this is something others who haven't ventured down this route should think about. I'm sure there's a few friends I've p**sed off in the past week with my 'spam' voting requests in their inbox!

So please, help this girl out with some advice. I feel at the moment that I SHOULD?? If anything, because cheats should be found out??

    Thank you for your time,
    Serious Comper x
P.S Sorry for the seriously LONG rant!! xx

IMHO voting comps bring out the worst in people :( at least 90% of the compers I know (me included) don't bother with voting comps other than to vote for their friends.

I would report it to the promoters in case they aren't aware this happens. But once you've reported it I'd try not to worry to much about it. Unfortunately it happens all the time. The same handful of people win the majority of voting comps for the reasons you mention and I can't see it changing :(

I agree - been comping for many years (too many to mention) but totally dislike this sort of thing. Any comp now that says 'voting' - then i stay well away. It's a shame, some of them are lovely comps. Well - I can't be doing with it and good luck to the winners if they find 'satisfaction' with their errrrm wins!! What goes round comes round!! xxx

I deleted my post as I upset someone by drawing attention to a name change.

    I whole heartedly apologise.

    Copied from Eleventh Heaven:

I've added all posts from April
I have encountered a problem though, while rejigging the posts so I'm not over the character limit all the formatting from certain numbers was removed

If your number is between Numbers 2000 to 3461 please repost any wins you had and the corresponding numbers so I can reformat your list

    Thanks

Just browsing through the comps forum has got me wondering. How much do you compers on average, spend entering competitions? I'd love to enter more of the text and postal comps but when you see each one tends to be £1 plus SNR or more, knowing me, i'd end up being mega out of pocket every month!
Is there some sort of cheap trick that people use for these or do you just limit yourself to a certain amount to spend?
I used to think posting was the cheap alternative but even that's 50p a go now lol

    A big fat zilch :-)

The very rare times I enter a text comp I use my comping mobile, which came with £5 credit that I have yet to use up.I only enter the standard charge comps.

I do not do postals.Everything else is online & free.

I usually put £10 per month onto my PAYG mobile. With my phone, if you don't add money every month you lose your free texts and I use those a fair bit. I think for me it works out more beneficial to spend £10 a month than to pay for individual texts, plus there is a chance of winning something. I do tend to stick to those that are less than £1 though.

Expected to be the only one who was going to say they begrudged paying :)
I really should get a comping mobile too. I really dislike giving out my number and won't use the house number as it's my parents. We get enough dodgy phonecalls!
