Hi all...hello to all the new ladies too..welcome..

Right what i did today..had to go to dentist for a filling...so i was high as a kite and laughing all the way through..on my way home my front brakes froze on my bike..so even going down hill i had to flipping pedal..my thighs and calves are killing me..my lip and face were so saggy from the injection i looked like quasimodo..i just had soup for tea..and that dribbled all over...my mouth is only just getting back to normal...

I did 3 loads of washing and got that out this morning..all dry and ready to be ironed(doing that in a minute)...hubby went to the lotties and brought back another lettuce..very nice..

Making all my pastry up tonight as its baking day tomorrow whoo-hoo..got some ground rice and i'm am so going to make a cherry bakewell with my cherry jam...

Got hubby a free fathers day card from that funky bird place..and thats my day...not very exciting but relaxed and simple.

I think I got into a little bit of debt when i first got married as a rebellion from my mothers ways, she was frugal and would only shop once a week and once it was gone it would not be replaced until the next shopping day which was always my dads work payday. We all looked forward to Friday lunchtime when we would come home from school and mum had been shopping and there were a few treats, usually a ski yoghurt and some crisps, which would be gone by Friday teatime!!! She was always careful with her money and still is to this day.
We go for Christmas dinner every year and my children although in their twenties still love going. None of her plates or cutlery match, she brings the plastic garden chairs in from the garden for us all to sit around the table, usually with a few spiders still attached. We drink our wine (usually lambrusco) out of old babysham glasses, she ties string to cheap chocolates and hangs them on her tree. She wont buy napkins and uses kitchen roll, she makes a jelly for dessert. We have garlic bread as a treat with our turkey!! Various presents we have received over the years have been an over the bath holder (used), a silver shoe horn, a battery operated shoe polisher, a roasting turkey tin, a rolling pin, tins of hairspray and pairs of tights.
Many years ago it really bothered me but I have come to realise that is just how she is and I love and accept her for that. As someone on here has already said its whats in your heart that matters.
  • Dee - if I were you, I'd still make her a present, I probably wouldn't go to the party though. dh's family find it very odd that we choose to live 'like this' - the reality (for us) is that we would rather 'do without' a lot of the things that they regard as essentials in order for one of us to stay at home with the children full time - that's more important to us at the moment. You're the one with the responsible attitude towards your money and resources, if they're living off credit then pretty soon they're going to hit the 'no more' wall & then they'll be needing all the help you can give them.

would this help at all? apologies if you have already seen it, but interesting to see there is protein in potatoes!!
    http://www.vegsoc.org/page.aspx?pid=781#dietary sources

Just under 2% of each potato is protein, according to this International Year of the Potato (2008) website. So 283.5 grams of potatoes (ten ounces) yields just 5.3 grams of your daily protein requirement (together with 57 grams of carbohydrate).
Re the food pyramid and a plate etc - I dont know anything at all about this. But I'd like to ask if the good old-fashioned meat & two veg would not be the perfect meal anyway? With a lot less hassle than this 5-a-day rubbish . I canny be a$$ed with all the silly frillyness that they seem to think wives and mums need now.

Yes Mardatha. Meat and two veg with a small helping of potato, and rice pudding with a generous helping of fruit for sweet. But three times a day, every day? And the vegetarians at the back won't be happy...

What I have discovered after a lifetime of dodgy blood sugar fluctuation is that there is much to be gained from having a proper breakfast. We often went to school without breakfast and I had the jitters by break time. At least in those days we had milk at break and a cooked school lunch, usually meat, greens and taters, or so it seemed.
