Scottishminnie-choux pastry is quite easy but you do make it a completely different way from shortcrust. I once made 200 profiteroles for my sisters wedding.

I'll give it a try as it looks nice. It has almond flakes scattered across it which I like. We eat at my parents on a Sunday evening and I always contribute dessert so I'll make it for then. Mum and dad are always happy to be guinea pigs for my experiments and I always have home made ice cream as a standby in case of disasters

Scottishminnie just wanted to mention about your cheese savoury mix, we used to run a cafe and did 'double cheese and spring onion' which a lot of the customers used to ask for as cheese savoury...It was just 2 types of cheddar (red and white for the effect mainly) with spring onion and mayonnaise and also some pepper...was my favourite and is especially gorgeous with bacon (if you are feeling decadent :D) hope it goes down well...

Not a great deal of money saving today however I have just experimented for tomorrow's sandwiches. In the filled roll places they often have a cheese savoury filling which I love so I thought I'd make it. I've grated cheese, added some chopped spring onions and lots of mayo however I'm not sure how successful it will be. It seems much more clumpy and clay like than the bought stuff. I'll chill it overnight and maybe at 5am tomorrow when I'm making the pieces it will be fine.
If anyone had any thoughts I'd be very grateful:D

I also picked up the free Asda mag at the weekend and there is a recipe in there for a choux ring filled with strawberries and mascarpone cheese. I have all the ingredients so I may give it a go. I'm a dab hand at shortcrust pastry but not sure if my skills will translate to choux just as easily - we will see:)
I know its not very MSE but asd@ do a cheese and spring onion sandwich filling. It is not too bad at £1, It is the only shop bought sandwich filling I like. If i have ever forgotton my sandwiches instead of buying ready made rolls I have bought a pack of rolls and a small pack of the spread, I then take the rest of the rolls home and freeze for another day. Works out much cheaper than the ready made ones.
Sorry cant get a link to work.

I bet you will be just as good at choux pastry. If you like it this is lovely http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/cuisine/european/french/cheese-choux-pastries-filled-with-mushrooms-in-madeira.html but I did not use fancy mushrooms, used the everyday ones (had a few dry ones in the cupboard and used some wine I had left over instead of the maderia)

Thanks for that Kittie, but it's been superseded twice, in 2005 and 2011. The latest icon, known as 'My Plate', divides foods into fruits, grains, vegetables and protein. Protein now represents about 25% of the 'plate' and dairy is in a little glass at the side, and it seems each meal is supposed to be a similar balance of foods. Quite where a potato fits in has to be guessed as we have been told that it doesn't count as a vegetable when we count our five a day, but it doesn't belong in fruits, grains, protein or dairy either, this chart being from USDA - the land of the potato.

Comparing the original Pyramid with My Plate, there's far less starch and more protein in the latest theory.

The official British advice is still the greater carbohydrate/starch amount and the less protein. The USA have woken up to the link between WHITE starches and obesity and diabetes. As usual they tried to simplify advice rather than giving people more info. There has been a very interseting book written but the name completely escapes me by a UK lawyer about the link between official nutritional advice and weight problems.
The potato issue is because when they first looked at recommended fruit and veg intake they decided on nine portions but that included potatoes (I think this is still the advice given in Australia) however they thought that if they told people nine portions when many only eat one or two they would just give up so they decided on five but shifted potatoes to the starch section. Interestingly they choose five as much because it was catchy as for the actual nutritional needs.
Now still on my soapbox:D I have a nutrition background and for my sins teach Home Economics and also do some children's nutritional advice work -and I have decided that our grandmothers' were right. Most of the things they told us were as good as any professional advice and often better.
    And breathe.....
I was off to conquer the world but I got distracted by something sparkly :D

I totally agree. Ceridwen you must have spent ages on your stats about bob.
Sorry, not keeping up and not having the best time at the moment, so a bit sporadic, x
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.
