oap wrote:Thanks for the stamps tip on the e mail Martin, however, if you purchase a first class stamp at today's price, then use it after the increase, it will be a different colour, so can the postoffice/postman ask the receiver of the mail for the shortfall?? oap
they won't do that, the class of stamp is honoured irrespective of how much you paid and when if they are marked 1st or 2nd. those with a price on will still be treated the same for a few weeks and then the 28p ones will be dealt with as second class although i don't know the specific date0 -
As a postman of many years I can tell you that first and second class mail IS seperated as it is all done these days by machine which reads the stamp under a FLORESSANT light at speed.
Also the reason that there is no gap in delivery time is due to the fact that first class has slowed down over the past few years and so it seems that there is no difference ( 2 days for 1st and 3 days for 2nd )
But in the true good will of this Money Saving Tips, And to pay back for all the cash I have saved since reading these tips, Here is how to save money.
First of all DONT threw away your toilet roll centers, But put your letter INSIDE the roll and push into an envelope, Put the address on the enverlope and seal it. Then put SECOND CLASS STAMP on packet. ( It Is No Longer A Letter, It's A PACKET and go's for the same price)
This when posted gets thrown OUT of the Machine and has to be sorted by hand.
THE POINT OF THIS IS.....Most sorting offices DONT segrigate 1st from 2nd class packets, EVERYTHING GO'S FIRST CLASS.
I by the way will still be posting first class. The reason is ROYAL MAIL give's all it's enployee's about forty first class stamps as a Xmas present.0 -
Still selling 1st class stamps at 80% of pre rise prices ie 100 = £22.40 details here discountstamps@gmail.com , the best deal around.0

Thanks for this Snaggle.
What does the machine chuck out (i.e. what width) as I post DVDs (such as films) singley in an envelope (eBay) and could save a lot posting them second class. The larger ones I send in a jiffy bag will presumably be classed as a packet already? Will these be put through by hand as well and go first class?0 -

dvd's are treated as packets.
the machines that separate the post are like a huge washing machine with slots in the drum, all the thin items, ie letter thickness, slip through the slots, everything else passes to the other side as a packet, the items that slip through the slots are usually no longer or wider than A4 but if they are thicker than perhaps a chequebook they will again pass through as a packet.
As another postie said elsewhere, stick a loo roll in and it will be too fat to be treated by automation and will have to go as a packet, in our office we rarely separate first and second class packets before they are sorted to destination however if the sorting staff are on the ball they should set aside second class packets while processing first class, it is then a matter of whether the sorter is doing their job as they are supposed to.
on the whole a manual check for whether an item is first or second is quite cursory, just a look at the colour of the stamp so if you want to increase the chances of your item being sent first when in fact you have only paid second you could put a selection of lower denomination stamps on up to the value of the postage and the chances are the sorting staff won't bother adding up their values. :T
p.s.
a dvd in a jewel or dvd case would be too thick
a dvd in a sleeve would probably pass as a letter but you seriously risk it being damaged.0 -
I have just bought 2 books of 1st class marked stamps at Boots (Manchester Airport T1) this lunchtime and they have only charged me £3.36 for 12, ie 28p.
Is it any wonder Boots are issuing profit warnings !!0 -
Good Job - Ordered 100 1st's last week off the Royal Mail Website and just picked up and posted 2 Ebay packages with it. Sold something that was kinda Heavy and the postage was 6.28, huge queue behind me as I paid with 21 1st Class Stamps ( 30 P Now, I paid 28! )0
