When it comes to sorting the parcels most are not weighed. Usually a guess is just made (as long as it doesn't look as if it's underpaid) and the cost of the stamps is usually what determines if it gets thrown in the bin/trolley thing for first class or second class.
So, of course, the three second class stamps could end up being considered as being 58p postage and getting sent in the second class mail IF for example the letter or parcel looks deceivingly large and/or heavy.
I ALWAYS write FIRST CLASS clearly on any package I send 1st class so that there's no mistake.
I NEVER write SECOND CLASS on any other package - NO point in SLOWING it down when it might go "1st by accident"
Also always get a PROOF of POSTING CERTIFICATE !
Saves a lot of hassle if it goes astray.

I noticed in Costco the other day that they are selling first class stamps on books in bulk at a price that works out at around 26.1p per stamp.
An even bigger chance to save money before the price rise!0 -

I received a bank card this morning which they had sent out in January! :-o
Obviously it had been cancelled weeks ago, and taken as lost. And now it turns up!
It has been duly chopped and shredded0 -
My favourite stamp buying tactic is to take all my shrapnel (coppers, 5ps) down to the post office and attack the little stamp machine, pumping it full before taking out stamps.
If you're feeling really cheap, load it up with coppers and when it gets to 20p press the refund button and convert you coppers into slightly more useful change...0 -
Thanks for the stamps tip on the e mail Martin, however, if you purchase a first class stamp at today's price, then use it after the increase, it will be a different colour, so can the postoffice/postman ask the receiver of the mail for the shortfall?? oap0

Sadly, we don't have one of these!A penny saved is a penny gained0 -
oap -- it will be a different colour, so can the postoffice/postman ask the receiver of the mail for the shortfall??
So long as the stamps says 1st or 2nd (i.e. NOT 28p or 21p) it's perfectly OK to use.0 -
Following on from a message earlier, I work in the stamp 'industry' and I can supply valid UK postage at 90% of the face value, including postage. If anybody is interested then get in touch and I can provide details.
