It's not a spectacular "gutter-to-millionaire" story, just a modest tale of one ordinary woman who faced homelessness, who sustained a serious physical injury at work, who was living on benefits with no prospect of a job, who managed to scrape a small living and thereby gain independence and contentment with her life.
The point was to inject a bit of good news, a small success story, into the general gloom and doom of most of the threads on here. I hoped it would warm the cockles of people's hearts. As I said, there is a helluva lot of spitefulness and anger on this forum directed to people who live off state benefits. I thought those people would be pleased to hear that someone got herself off benefits and is now self supporting. (I didn't realise they'd hate me for that, too LOL)
People on here have criticised me for not being inspirational to others, but how can they speak for others? For all they know, someone might be inspired to chuck out the junk from their spare room and take in a lodger, or use their time on IB to get a degree or write a book. Who can say what other people might be thinking?
If it attracts newbies then that is a good thing.0 -
It's fascinating, isn't it? Well, Ok, not fascinating but at least interesting. I'm always intrigued as to what motivates OPs like this whether they are genuine or not.
Well, Andy, if you PM me I am perfectly happy to show you my book publishing website and/or my house-share website, so you can see for yourself that everything I have said is 100% true and accurate. However, I don't want this info spread all over this forum as I am entitled to the same degree of personal privacy as everyone else and would not want my address given out.0 -

.
And all very commendable which is why I don't understand the need to call yourself super.landlady and write stuff like this.I can only assume that people who couldn't live on my income are drinking booze and smoking, running cars, paying mortgages and - most wallet-draining of all -- bringing up kids!
???
One day you'll probably be glad someone else thought to have children.;)0 -

That is my wife, my daughter and myself and between us we have a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, a downstairs WC, a main bathroom and three bedrooms. Having never been married I dont expect you to realise just how special it is to share.
You are full of self indulgent drivel. When walking around your town have you ever said "do you know who I am?". I bet you have.
Envious of you? :rotfl:
I think your envy glows like a beacon on a moonless night.
Poor you -- you don't have one single room to call your own!
And p.s. you don't have to be married to share living space. I have lived with a male partner for MANY years without going through a marriage ceremony. (Now you can attack me for THAT, as well LOL)0 -

Well, it's probably obvious to you, but for younger people, it might not be so obvious that taking in lodgers is a good way to get on the property ladder if that is what you want to do. The only way my parents were able to buy their own property in the 70s was by doing what the OP is doing.0 -

That won't be necessary:). If you are genuine then you may have learned a bit about how to approach posting on a site like this. Your OP would have passed relatively unremarked with a different tone and might have helped some people.0 -

I am EXTREMELY glad that other people have children.
I am also amazed that, having got bored of attacking me for being self-supporting, you and that other green bloke have now moved on to attacking me for not being married, criticising me for not having given birth to children, for being an author, for sharing my living space and, paradoxically, for NOT sharing my living space.
Apparently I am now the Devil incarnate. Everything I do, everything I have ever done, is in your eyes wrong, reprehensible, and worthy of attack. And all because I take in lodgers.
How very interesting and indeed hilarious this thread is turning out to be. You and he would keep a whole conference of psychiatrists busy for a lifetime!0 -

What I have learned is that there are people like you who have nothing better to do on a weekday afternoon than criticise someone who has made a success of her life and wants to share the good news with others.
Just what IS your motive for being on this thread? How come you are not working? Are you unemployed, is that why you are so angry at me?0 -

The same as yours. A little light entertainment.0 -
and what about all the interviewing for new tenants?(too much hassle
Once in a while a room comes empty and I advertise in the local paper, adding the website I created for the house-share, which has photos and all the details about it. I then interview whoever responds. If they pass the 3 minute telephone interview (are they working? can they pay the deposit? are they clean and tidy? do they have refs?) then I invite them to the house, show them the deal and have a chat with them. That takes about an hour, about once or twice a year. I then spend an hour chasing up their references.
If you find that "too much hassle" and would rather work 40 hours a week 48 weeks a year than spend two hours a year on getting a new lodger, that is your choice.0
