Gonna have to bump this thread to share more ranting!!

Was in a queue for the till in Asda today when a woman behind us put 4 packs of baby wipes on the conveyer and walked off. A second later another couple pulled up behind and waited before putting their shopping on seeing the other items on the till (I wonder if they though me and my partner were paying for things separately?) After this the original lady appeared with her trolley and pushed past to get to her baby wipes and started emptying her trolley with another woman, presumably her mother. So effectively this ignorant cow 'reserved' her place in the queue to go and get some more shopping. I couldn't believe how someone could have the audacity to reserve a place in a queue, the other couple moved to the next till. Perhaps I'm too impolite but I would have told this woman where to go.

After we'd packed our stuff the older woman stood in front of the chip and pin machine before we'd paid. She didn't even move when my partner went to use the machine and stayed exactly where she was when I went to use it. I deliberately took my time and stood shoulder to shoulder with her, I made sure to give her daggers as I'd left. I still wish I'd turned round and reminded her about personal space.

I never understood how anyone feels they can act like that, it's ignorant and completely rude, and to top it off someone didn't give me a 'thank you' wave when I let them pull out of a space.

I'm gonna just stop being nice to people

My reading of your post is that the shopper behind you at the self service checkout went back for an additional item and was still able to finish before you

It appears that you took longer at the self service checkout than them because you were still there when they returned

You say "After we'd packed our stuff the older woman stood in front of the chip and pin machine before we'd paid" confirming that you had not paid for your shopping before the other shopper returned

Perhaps they thought you wanted their space and therefore you should have been grateful to them

Apologies if I have misinterpreted your post

Question - what does a checkout operator do between serving customers ?

Answer - pick their nose and ears , spit on their fingers to open the carrier bags - then touch your shopping

On the other had the poster you quoted seems to have paid at a "manned" till (so to speak) and the person behind them stood by the chip and pin machine before they had even completed their payment. Seems slightly obvious to me.

Makes sense now - I tend to use the self service checkouts wherever possible (so have a choice of more than one checkout via a single queue)

It is interesting to note that the poster was still at the checkout when the other shopper returned with their extra items in a trolley (indicating that they were not away for long)

Is it considered acceptable for the shopper behind to add extra items to their shopping if they are ready to proceed as soon as the shopper in front has paid for their shopping ?

(for example I do not know how many items the person in front of me at the deli counter is going to order - they may want one of everything)

  • Sorry if I wasn't clear (although I didn't think it'd cause confusion) - I was at a normal bog standard till waiting for the person before me to finish being served. A woman came up behind my space in the queue, put some baby wipes on the conveyer and left, she came back and pushed past another couple with the rest of her shopping, which is bad enough, but then the older woman hovered uncomfortably close to me and my partner while we were trying to pay. We couldn't use self-service as we'd done a 'big' shop with more than the allowed number of items.

I've no problems with anyone going back to add items if they forget something, we all do it and I make sure my partner is still left with the shopping. However, it's the fact she had taken a small number of items, left them and then went to fetch her trolley. To me, she was reserving a space in the queue which is pretty unacceptable. She clearly hadn't forgotten any items, she just wanted to get through the queues quicker. That's not a bad thing, but we all have to wait. I'm now waiting for someone to accuse me of making assumptions...

Thanks to the lovely lady who decided to load her stuff onto the conveyer belt- as I was doing mine! Took the first few items of hers and set them at the end, then asked her nicely to wait- I'd only just arrived at the checkout a couple of mins before and had just started unloading my stuff.

ok heres another that happens to me quite regular - every time it is by a older woman, not the same woman all different women but never the less the same horrible tactic is used.

I stand in the queue, i see from the corner of my eye a older woman who will NOT stand behind me, instead she will stand shoulder to ribcage (i'm usually taller than them) with me, as the queue progresses i see her taking more steps forward until i am nearly at the checkout, she has wriggled her way slowly IN FRONT of me, shopping basket also in front of me but still she is standing to the side, occasionally they will start to unload before me.

I find it irritating, rude and always think to myself when i first notice the side line creeper out of the corner of my eye, "oh man, another older lady who has no concept of queues or waiting her turn" and i am usually right, they nearly always try to get to the checkout before me, such behaviour makes me wonder if they have done this all their life, and this is quite a common thing for me it happens nearly every time i'm in the queue. Maybe i'm the only one, but i doubt it.

You missed out vital information: What do you do about it? :)

It's never happened to me. Are you talking about when you queue alongside the conveyor or when you are in what is supposed to be a single file queue?
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.

    In a single file queue!

What i do is let her think she has got away with it and barge in and put my stuff on the conveyor before her, or before hers if she has started to unload already, once or twice i had "theres a queue here" i thought the irony of that comment is astronomical, and i had a old lady shout "Ey, watch who your shovin'!" but i didn't shove her i just more or less leaned over her basket with my stuff.
