  • The best sausage roll pastry is Delia's quick flaky. I've just tried it with mince pies and I love it;)

Ok i'm going to "make" my own sausage rolls but i've never done it before i've only watched my mum so i just want to check i have it right before i poison myself or something similar :D

i take sasuages, wrap them in puff pastry (with a bit of egg here and there to stick and make it shiney) then bung them in the oven for about 20mins or so (hence "make" i'm not good at pastry so thats bought and it's just wrapping up sausages! :rotfl:)

is that right? or i have a missed out some vital step?

oh and can i freeze the result or is it best just to freeze the componants seperately?

Usually you use saugage meat rather than sausages. But if thats how your mum makes then and thats how you like them then its all good!

Sausage meat is best as you can roll it as thick or thin as you like and you dont have to bite through a sausage skin.
you could always put a bit of apple puree on the the sausage, pork and aple sausage rolls are deeelicious.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

oh I HAVE to tell you this
my nephew was supposed to be making apple turnovers in tech or home ec or whatever they call it (aged 15ish)
and he forgot his ingredients for the pastry so
    he bought a sausage roll
    opened it
    ate the sausage meat
stuffed the now empty roll with apple
and passed it off...said he had 'pre cooked' the pastry

    Hiya Annie!

You can freeze a a whole BTW
Don't put it DOWN; put it AWAY

I make sausage rolls with sausages, but I add sage and onion stuffing to the meat, and a little bit of mixed herbs.

No ideas what they taste like as I'm a veggie! but my lot love them made that way

I usually use sausage meat to make mine but skinned sausages would be just the same.

This is how I do them:

    - mix together, sausage meat breadcrumbs, parsley, sage, salt and pepper and an egg to bind.

    - roll sausage meat mix into a sausage shape and lay on the rolled out pastry

    - roll sausage in the pastry and seal the edge with beaten egg. Leave the join on the underside.

    - chop into small sized rolls and make slits in the top

    - put on baking tray and brush with beaten egg before cooking in the oven for about 20 minutes.

Serve warm out of the oven.

For pics of how I did them, see here

I'll add this to the main thread on making sausage rolls later to keep the ideas together.
