petrol prices hiking!

My local Asda has reduced fuel by 1p this evening (back to what it was on Monday anyway) but the local Shell and Jet garages haven't reduced it yet.

My local BP reduced its prices by 1p yesterday evening...but it's gone back up again already! I didn't pass any others after 6pm yesterday, but this morning all the prices are the same as they were yesterday morning. An extra penny for the oil companies I guess.

Of course, the Government are going to tax oil companies extra, guess who will be paying that ..;)

Irrespective of the underlying facts, the government is using our fear of both of the above to tax us all heavily.

Well it is a lot cheaper in the USA but compare like with like. A US gallon is not the same size as one of ours. It's about 15% smaller than an imperial one.

It isn't all hysteria. People are living longer and the system is, consequently, getting more expensive. In the private sector many final salary schemes have been ended for new entrants or ended full stop because they are not sustainable. In the public sector there have been some changes with contributions increasing marginally and the default retirement age moving up but this will not be enough to stop it becoming more of a drag on those who are younger. It is likely that life expectancy will increase so the problem will get worse unless some action is taken. We3 have an ageing population and those who work to support pensions are now outnumbered by those who don't.

When I started work a few decades ago those in the private sector used to sneer at public sector pensions. That has been replaced with those who tell us how lucky those in the public sector are. Some of it maybe the politics of envy but not all.

20% actually. The US pint is 16 fluid ounces while our pint is 20 fluid ounces.
