petrol prices hiking!

hi,
im 23 years old and i am sick of the way this country is running what money i earn into the ground. My main thing at the moment is the petrol prices. I want to know how to start a partition to stop petrol prices getting higher, especially the tax of petrol.

can anyone help or has somebody already started this?

thanks

If you search on Facebook I think you will find numerous campaigns on there. Petrol prices are never going to come back down though - it's the tax that makes up most of the cost of a litre and this is used to fund government spending.

Cut petrol tax and they will just get the money from elsewhere..

not possible to stop the price rising at the pump as the cost is rising at the barrel (production end) its not the retailers that are pushing this higher.

Yes the goverment have a lot to answer for as they take a huge amount of the money per litre in tax. The problem is if you now get them to drop this tax they have to find other ways to get this tax out of you. Depending how they would decide to do this you could become worse off.

As for the cost price of barrels of oil this is all done by contacts and future contracts traded on the markets. This price is being maintained by the countries that supply the oil by limiting how much they produce, after all oil is a finite reserve and will run out some day so they are trying to make as much money as possible now.

Yes i would to like a system like they have in the USA where the cost of a gallon of fuel is $3.49 or £2.18 but i guess if they went this way then you would have to pay road tolls instead!!!

There is no link between fuel tax and road spending. And there would be no reason to have road tolls were fuel duty to fall. The government could increase any number of other taxes such as income tax or VAT.

The fact remains the government, and the previous one, are trying to reduce petrol usage, which is why the tax is so high. They are trying to make it so expensive that people drive less and either use other forms of transport or readjust their lifestyles so they travel less.

If they are indeed doing this then they seem to be providing no credible alternative.

Perhaps if some money was spent on the public transport infrastructure more people would be inclined to use it.

After the last range of 'hikes' back in 1998 when at one point i was paying £500 a month for diesel in my x5 and my wife was paying £250 a month for fuel for her car, plus £2000 a year for home heating oil we decided to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

Firstly, when my car was due a change, i bought the most fuel efficient one i could find that suited my needs - a Passat Bluemotion that did 65mpg.

We also were in the fortunate position of building our own house last year. We went for solar panels to heat the water for showers, biomass wood pellet burner and underfloor heating, high insulation levels, etc.

I've also moved job sites so i now travel 15 miles return trip rather than 70 and i bought an oldish car thats low on fuel costs and low on depreciation. And my wife has halved her mileage since we moved home.

I'd say we've reduced our fossil fuel usage from around £11,000 a year to around £3,000 a year. Plus the £2000 or so we're spending with the biomass renewable wood pellet burner ( the new house would probably have taken £4000 of oil to heat for a year)

I know we've been in quite a unique set of circumstances, but the real way forward here for everyone is to reduce their reliance on oil and thus reduce their costs.

For the bulk of people :-
    • only make essential journeys
    • investigate more efficient ways of driving - eg dropping from 70mph to 50mph gives something like a 40% improvement in economy
    • consider car pooling
    • consider public transport if it works out cheaper
    • think about walking or cycling where possible
    • when you are due to change your car, buy a much more economical one
    • look at alternative heat sources for your home
    • find out what added levels of insulation you can add to your home
Sadly, the days of cheap fuel are gone forever.

Why not? It did the last time prices topped £1.26 a litre! (2006ish?). It's £1.33 a litre for petrol and £1.38 a litre for diesel where I live now, and I really can't see it going much higher!
