I am coming nearly into a year since I was made redundant - part time job and self employed business is going very nicely.
Redundancy seemed to be the best thing that ever happened to me xxx0 -
Just wanted to stop by and update you all with whats happened. Firstly massive thanks to those who replied to my redundancy questions on here, if it wasn't for you i'd be lost.
Secondly I've started a new job, on a lower salary than I was previously on..but the company is far more structured and i'm alot less stressed than the job i was made redundant from. More flexibility with this job too.
There were so many posts on here saying redundancy was the best thing to have happened, though I couldn't see that at the time. I am pleased to say that redundancy was a good thing to happen to me0 -
Hi All,
I'm currently in the consultation period with a view to being served notice of redundancy 1st Oct. I am due 12 wks notice which takes me to the end of the year but have started 'negotiating' for an earlier release under a compromise agreement. It's looking likely my request will be granted and they'll make me an offer of a lump sum equivalent to my notice period pay and in the process save themselves and me the tax/ni which would be paid if I sat it out on garden leave for 3 months. The concern I have is that there could be a chance of me getting another job quickly (contacts with previous employer) but I would not want this to jeopardise my pay off. I know, it's not the worst problem to have....
Obviously I'm playing my cards close to my chest with my employer but what I want to understand is the point at which they cannot retract their offer. Is it after they've put it in writing and I have accepted or could they literally withdraw it the day before I am due to receive my payment? My nightmare scenario would be them receiving a reference request from a new employer the day before I was due to receive my compromise payment and them withdrawing it! Could this happen? Does anyone have any experience of this or knowledge of the law in this area? I would add that my employer is a large organisation who generally treat people fairly so I wouldn't them doing anything particularly underhand but I guess you never know.....
Thanks

Smudge...did you get anywhere with this? Hope it is going well.
Hi all. If you have read from the start I was the originator of this thread and am pleased with all the assitance that has been offered in my absence.
i still love the positiveness of most posts once people realise that this is usually a chance to have a life laundry and try something new. This in no way is meant to detract from the pain and heartache that can be felt by many but to merely say that there is life after the big R and if we make the most of it there are plenty of opportunities to "make something good out of something bad"
i am currently 6 months into a job on a much lower pay than before and my wife has had to return to work. I love my job because i am helping others everyday and my wife is currently assisting many charities (but doesn't really like her job). However, we are no so worried about money and would survive for a short while if she was to stop and look for another job.
Keep your thoughts coming and please keep positiveAndyboy :idea:0 -
I've just read the whole thread, it's so positive- and wonderful to see happy endings (or beginnings!)
My OH was made redundant and finished last week, in his mid fifties. We are being positive, he had an interview last week, not successful and has another this week. I've told him to read this thread as it's so inspiring. Thanks Andy for starting it!0 -

Just a quick post, I see this thread hasn't been updated for a while...
I'm now in France, have been for over a year now! Everything is going really well, my redundancy money ran out so I am working hard now to earn each month. I set-up as a virtual assistant, but I tend to do more eBook formatting than anything else, and websites.
Loads of good stuff has happened since I took voluntary redundancy, I don't know whether I could have afforded to live in the UK for as long as I managed to here in France on my money.
Hope anyone I spoke to on this thread previously are also doing well...0 -

...just a few names from the earliest posts. Where are you and any others I haven't mentioned now? How are you getting on? Let's let any new readers know there is life after the big "R".
I am currently employed in a community interest company and assist schools. Not only is the job really enjoyable as I am helping many people comply with H&S and property Legislation, there are no fatcats or shareholders and any moneys remain in the education sector. God knows they need all the help they can get to ensure the next generation or so get the best possible start in life. Pay isn't great but the rewards help, as does OH working PT from home.
Let me know what you are doing. I bet the positive outcomes outweigh the negatives.Andyboy :idea:0
