We have a thermostat in the hall, not the ideal place............as the hall is very small, we had to turn the radiator off as the hall is so small the thermostat used to turn off the heating and the rest of the house would be cold. We have the heating on 24 hours, it is set at 19 during the day and then we lower it to 16 when we go to bed, the house is always warm and the boiler does not have to work overtime to heat up a cold house.
Last year our bill was £240 for gas, we live in a 2 bedroomed semi, we have cavity wall insulation and also had the insulation in the attic brought up to standard, boy its cold up there, I went up to get the deccys down....bbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, b ut the house is toasty.........we still have 2 windows that are not double glazed, but hopefully we will get those replaced next year.
We actually find it cheaper to run the heating this way, we used to do the 2 hours in the morning and 5 at night routine and the bills were higher, because the house cooled down when we are out........we have a combi boiler in the kitchen put in new 2 years ago...............it works very well..........Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -

Usually around 17. Never have it on in the mornings (grew up in a house without central heating, so got used to it!).
Live in a bungalow on a sloping site with concrete floors and it takes a good couple of hours before it stops feeling like the cold air is coming through the floor (which it probably is as there is a huge gap between the concrete and the slope of the ground!)0 -
Ours isnt on regularly yet.
We're all wearing warm clothes, and for the last few days, we have brought a quilt downstairs and snuggled in front of the telly.

Normally 19 - 20. Our thermostat is also in a silly place, in the hall opposite a radiator! We've just changed from warm-air heating (like a big gas-fired hairdrier) to combi and rad's and are just learning how to get it to do what we want. So far, so good, warm enough without the boiler being on all the time, unlike the old rubbish.
We are also detatched so must look into insulating the cavities - is this worth the money?0 -
our heating has been broken for 6 weeks now,so no central heating! we have a little portable heater on when we get too cold.0

Yes it is worth doing, it will save you money in the long run, have a look on the internet, we also put extra down in the attic, if you have doubke glazing it helps too.....we got ours done for free, we are on HB so got it done through warm front.... its the second house we have had done through the scheme and it has saved us a lot of money. Even when its very cold I do not turn the heating up if we are sitting we use fleeces......hot water bottles to warm the bed and I have a patchwork quilt on with a 10.5 tog duvet, right now the quilt is folded at the bottom of the bed, we have not had to have it on yet. I wish we were able to persuade the landlord to put thermo valves on the rads that would also save us some cash, the kitchen gets very hot when the oven is on, if we had the valves it would turn the rad off..........Was 13st 8 lbs,Now 12st 11 Lost 10 1/4lbs since I started on my diet.0 -
We have our heating set at 15,I wouldn't say our house is cold, but it isn't very warm,we tend to lounge under fleece throws while watching telly! I put the heating on for an hour in the morning and from about 4 - 9.30 in the evening. If one of the children say 'they can see their breath' I tend to turn it up a degree.Forgot to add,we also sleep with the windows open.

I've turned the heating down from 25 to 20. It's usually on 6 -8 am, again at midday for an hour and again 3-7:30.
We are lucky enough to have cavity wall insulation and good loft insulation this year - but sadly a very draughty back door and slightly draughty front door undoes this. I have however made a peculiar looking draught excluder for the back door that has improved things slightly
