I don't think I use central heating the same way as other people. I switch it off completely overnight and leave it off all day if I'm going to work. When I get home, or if it's the weekend and I'm home all day, I put it on quite high, say 25, to heat the house, then put it down again an hour or so later to between 14 & 18. Then I switch it off again when I'm going to bed. Don't know if this saves energy tho, I doubt if it does. I have a warm flat anyway tho, it's upstairs and so if the downstairs neighbours are home their heating floats up and warms my place, helps to cut down.

I fired up the wood burning stove and turned the heating off. After 30 mins of chopping logs i felt quite warm anyway...

  • I have it set at 20 but it is timed for 6-8am then 5-10 pm. We have a coal fire in living room which we do light in the day if needed as OH is disabled and home all day. Mind you we are in SE and haven't had any frosts yet!
  • We dont really use our heating that much. Maybe about 30 minutes in the evening but not always. I just switch it on and leave it on for 30 and then go switch it off. That just takes the edge off the coldness and makes it more comfortable.

Up until last week I had it set at 18 all the time. But now it is a bit chilly I set it at 20. However if I am going to be out all day, then I set it back down to 18. Can't go down lower than that or else DS2 wakes up at 4 in the morning thinking its time to get up:eek:

We have it at 19/20 but it's only on between 7pm and 10:30pm.

If it gets much colder, we may have to have it on for 30mins in the morning before work but resisting that!

I used to do the hoovering, (not allowed at present), if it gets cold around lunch time or come in here where the computer is, which always seems warmer, even when it hasn't been on.. We have it on in the mornings to get up and then on in the evenings if student/s in. Otherwise we light a fire in sitting room, smokeless coal, and leave heating off. Over the xmas break we have the heating on most of the day.

And the thermostat is at 15 now but I do tend to move it up and down.

  • Thanks, don't feel so guilty now ... I've turned mine up to 17 and the radiators have come on - bliss!!

I understood that it was more efficient to have the boiler on 24hrs and control it by the thermostat than keep turning it on and off though???

I have mine at 20°C and it's on from 6am - 10.30pm. It's not on constantly as there's a thermostat in the hall that click it off and on as the temperatures rises and falls.

I've got Raynaud's so I'm in too much pain and my fingers and toes go purple if I get cold, so I can't reduce it anymore.
Here I go again on my own....

15 degrees all the time, 18 between 7 and 7.30am in the morning and 5 and 10pm at night. I find keeping it at 15 degrees the rest of the time makes it easier to warm up again, rather than turning it off completely.

Its on 15 now, we all have jumpers on and have just had warm soup :D

Yes it is supposed to be, I have a timed thermostat, it works very well. Boiler controls are just left on 24h
