If you have a big garden, have you thought about tanked calor gas? Obviously the installation would be quite a lot, but I think it would pay for iteself over time. You have to have a biggish garden though, because the tank has to be x feet from the house.
It is on the "for the future list" but need to be debt free first.

No gas here either, or mains sewerage
I've been told oil is very expensive. A neighbour has it and they wear a lot of jumpers too.
Do have mains sewerage though.Debt at LBM £15231.43:eek: now £11397.43 Coming Down

beer2006 wrote:The idea is to have the boiler on all the time and not to let the temp drop below a certain level (I use 15) as its supposed to take alot more energy to heat up the house from a lower temp, than just to keep it ticking over at a slightly higher temp.
It seems to work for me.
Good point! I guess it's just a matter of finding an ideal temperature that doesnt keep the gas being sucked up but keeps it warm.- Matthew - Yep I'm new here

We've not long moved into our flat, and the thermostat doesn't have a timer on... mm. So far this winter we've left it on overnight at 15 a couple of times but that's it0

I was quite shocked reading on the utilities board that a couple of people have theirs set at 14 sounds freezing
Ours is on 24 hours daytime at 20 and I turn it down to 18 when the kids go to bed.0 -
looby75 wrote:I think it would depend on what kind of central heating system you have. We have an old "behind the fire boiler" kind, that heats up the water and stores it whether you use it or not. If the heating is on, but the thermostat says it's warm enough the water isn't pumped through the radiators, but the system still keeps heating up the water in the boiler. It would cost me a fortune to leave it on 24/7 and I would have to keep running off hot water from the system as it overheats if left on too long  (I live in a council house but they council won't do anything about it as we are all supposed to be getting combi boilers in the next couple of years)

it might work for you then, my sister has her heating on 24/7 (she lives in Scotland) on a combi boiler system and it doesn't bankrupt her. It would be hard to do a real comparison though because her house is bigger than mine and she pays for her gas by pre payment meter.
Why don't you do a trial run over the next couple of weeks. Take note of how much gas you use in 7 days using your heating as you normally do, then try leaving it on low all the time for 7 days after that and compare the usage.0 -
We have an electronic thermostat that changes the temperatures several times during the day based on a set program. We vary the program by season and when the clocks change. Some newer onese do the season/clock changes automatically.
Something like this:
It saves money because it gives you much more control over what tempearture you have when. How long will it take to pay back the £30 odd cost (plus fitting) I don't know - you'll need to do your sums!0
