I spoke to iKube today to try and get to the bottom of this.

Thought i`d share my findings for the benefit of others, although its too late to help us now.

The issue (which is NOT clear on their website or in dealing with them) is that your provisional quote doesn`t increase once you have passed your test. This is the crucial part, you MUST be insured with them as a provisional driver, then, once you pass your premium will not increase.

If you ring up after passing to try and get insurance, as we did, you`ll find premiums difficulty getting a quote, or if you do, they come in at over £5,000 as we found.

Very disappointing and something that was NOT clearly explained in the conversations whilst he was a provisional driver. If it had been, we`d have insured him with them from the start and he would now be enjoying driving for the same premium, instead of being unable to find any affordable insurance, which is where we find ourselves now.

just phoned ikube and only young drivers for a quote for my 18 year old son who is about to take his test
only young drivers claim to ask a few questions and then find a cheap policy. they asked two questions and then said they couldn't insure him!! 1. his age 2. his postcode
ikube also couldn't insure him based on his postcode
the coop for young drivers (fitted with a monitoring device) quoted £7k
any suggestions other than moving house?
we live in a pleasant suburb in south manchester but apparently "m" postcodes are a "no go" area for most car insurers
any insurance companies out there that insure manchester post codes for young drivers
ps conventional sites like moneysupermarket and gocompare also refused to quote
pps for clarity, I am only talking about 18 year olds in "m" postcodes
"adults" can get insurance without too much of a problem

son passed test ; congratulations :T

Directline, esure and aviva refused to quote :(
insure your motor quoted more for TPFT than for comprehensive

any ideas out there other than the one I read on another thread for my son to have an operation to turn him into a girl!!

or to move somewhere with no other car drivers to collide with?

My 17 year old son is on my insurance(Fully comp) and it cost him under £1800. That is with Aviva, and there is no increase in the cost when he passes(hopefully in August). We couldn't find any way of getting him insured in his own right, but we're told that a year's claim free driving (in my fiesta!) will bring next year's premium down.
    Hope that's true!!!
  • thanks marrbett
when you say it "cost" £1,800, do you mean aviva charged £1,800 extra on top of what you were already paying for yourself?
or that you and your son together cost £1,800?
I am with highway, and they won't allow my son on my policy, presumably because he is 18

Yes, it cost him an extra £1800 to go on my insurance. He has paid for it!!! HTH
  • Thanks Marrbett, you did well to get that quote (and to get your son to pay it!!) :T
Maybe I need to move my insurance away from Highway (part of LV) either now or on renewal. I did try Aviva but they won't insure me due to 3 month ban 3 years ago (speeding).

For info for anyone else I now have a quote of £4k from Ingenie, the Gary Linekar company, that encourages young drivers to drive well WITHOUT stopping them from driving at night etc. Still a lot of money, and I will have to pay without a contribution from my son, but it gets him "on the ladder" and the premium will be much less next year (and he will get useful feedback on his driving style)

Well, he knew from the outset that we wouldn't be paying such ridiculous amounts of money for insurance- even £1800 is a colossal amount to fork out for insurance-I couldn't justify it myself!! I think they would be better off using public transport and waiting until they are older-but ultimately it's up to them I guess(and you, if you are happy to pay for it!!)

All the best to your son as he begins this new adventure!!
  • If you have a job in the civil service or have any other family member that does (or has in the past!!)? Have a look either of you joining CSMA. They have been able to reduce quotes for my son from approx £5-7K down to £3k. It's about £15/year to be a member. (They also provide discounts on holidays/days out/hotels etc in a regular magazine/email).

  • Hi all, long time lurker first time poster.

I'm 22, have been driving for one year and I'm insured with the Co-operative young driver policy. At the end of the month I will have no car meaning I will lose my job thanks to the co-op. I unfortunately fell into the statistics and had an accident in October 2011. I payed my excess and the co-op never said anything else. They even allowed me to insure a bigger and better car (my current car: 2000 Seat Ibiza 1.4). I have logged into my dashboard and it says my driving has been consistantly 'Excellent'. Despite this they have said they will refuse to give me a renewal because I had an accident :(

All other companies have quoted nothing less than 5K (believe me, i've rang a lot).

What do I do? With no car I will lose my job, I can't pay my credit cards and will ultimately lose everything. They have no idea what damage they do to us when they simply wave us away saying 'no'.

any help will be greatly appreciated :)
