I think ofcom would be interested in this. The police are only interested in speeding drivers or their takeaway getting cold.0

Hi,
I received this message today at 9:49am, have not called them back... I think they are doing the rounds, we live in West Sussex, we have also had a "we tried to deliver a parcel note" through the door, one of my neighbours rang the number and it costed them about £20 in charges before they disconnected the call...0 -
Just received the same.
http://www.icstis.org.uk/ are the regulatory body for premium rate but they may well be interested in this one as well.0 -
Oops, not their responsibility
Their sites says......................................................................
This is what we know about the number you entered (08712089407).
ICSTIS does not regulate this type of number. However we can tell you the following.
* This is classified as a Special Services higher rate: up to and including 10p for BT customers (non-internet) number.
* It is provided by TELSTRA EUROPE LIMITED.
* And costs 10ppm [in pence or pounds where 'pm' means 'per minute' and 'pc' means 'per call'].0 -
NO they didnt, and I wish people would stop making up stuff like this. It is NOT possible, and Im not getting at you but it is just absolute nonesense.0

I've just googled a missed call I received today.
It's a premium rate scam where you end up on hold waiting for a false "important message".

thanks...i was wondering what that was - i had the same call today but mine was from this number:
08718727593
Very convincing timing - the fake calls are usually well out of sync with answering machines but this one was spot on!0 -
1. This isn't a particularly 'premium rate' number. The £1.50/min all start 090....
2. Some of the ansa machine things actually listen for lulls in your speech pattern and then respond..hence they seem quite good.
3. Just in passing there are no £20 a minute numbers, nor is it possible to 'switch your call to a premium line without you knowing' scam.
4. Many of the 0871 or 0845 scam calls are merely to refer you (when you call) to an 090 number...I think this is because they believe this is a loophole that helps them avoid ICSTIS/OFCOM regulation.

Yes, I'm aware of most of the urban myths regarding expensive calls.
However, people could save themselves a few pence by not replying to this call if they see the number.Happy chappy0
