  • I got a phone call from "The Information Team" on my answerphone at 1.31 pm this afternoon. I was suspicious when I rang them back, got a recorded message and was put on hold so I cancelled the call, Googled the number and found this thread. Hence my call to Tony.

I told him all this but he says they are 'aware and concerned' but for contractual reasons have to research the matter before taking action. He seems to think they are conducting Market Research but their outgoing message tells the lie that I had supplied THEM with information about which they needed to speak to me further! I told Tony Eames to look here, print the page and he would have 'prima facie' reason to suspend the service to "The Information Team".

It only cost me about 15p but I am outraged about that, and if you look here, Tony Eames, you should be ashamed if you do not pull the plug on "The Information Team" immediately. You deserve the bad publicity you will inevitably attract.

I got a message from this joke of a operation as well. The cheek to leave rubbish on your answerphone. I think the idea of it is to slowly collect money by appearing to not be a premium phone number but a 0870 number that gives a small amount to them (reason why saynoto0870 exists). That way they hope it won't get closed down and make money from this clear scam.
  • Apart from being a damn nuisance it is trying to obtain money by deception.

It's obviously illegal but the sad fact is these frauds are protected by Ofcom.
The problem is the network operators that bill us take a cut of the action and the government take 17.5 %.
The Communications Act 2003 clearly states that if a company persistantly abuses the nework Ofcom can withdraw its permission to use it.

It's very possible Tony Eames and "the information team" are one of the same.
  • Yep, same here I think they've been ringing for a while and annoying the wife, both numbers logged are 0870 9504801 and 0871 2089406.
  • I was contacted today, and the number is now 08712089405. Is this random dialling, or are numbers being passed on by someone we have given information to online ? If they have enough lines and have automated dialling this could be a nice little earner. Remember the urban legend about the bank clerk who had all the odd halfpennies in customer accounts transferred to his own account !!!

I too got a phone call this morning, I answered it and it sounded as thought the guy on the end of the phone was leaving a message, although my answer machine was not switched on, anyway i dialed 1471 and the number 08712089406 was the origin. Unfortunately I dialed the number back before i had thought to google it, and it rang a few times then went onto one long tone.
  • They use Automatic Calling Equipment (ACE).
    The numbers so far:

    0871 208 9408
    0871 208 9407
    0871 208 9406
    0871 208 9405
    0871 208 9404
    0871 208 9403

In previous cases the tones you hear when you phone are just recordings, in fact you are connected and being charged.
  • Received this phone call twice now. On surfing it seems that a couple of people have complained to Telstra Europe about this.

I also found this useful link where you can investigate which telecom company owns certain numbers. Look up any dodgy numbers using this site and find a first port of call to complain.
