  • I'm sorry I think I may have confused the discussion. I was just trying to give an example of what I believed to be a failing of the new proposed regulator of the 0871 numbers.
I was just trying to show they have a history of being slow to stamp on scamsare.

It's possible it was misunderstood but it was most certainly not misinformation.

    Appologies to godger and all.

wantme: no apologies necessary -- I don't actually think anything you posted is connected to this inadvertent misinformation issue anyway.

Somebody else, with the best intentions, posted details of a company, and followed up today with some personal contact info re that company. I wasn't sure how the original post fitted into the complaints made here nor if the follow-up was ditto, but couldn't get back on to query because I'm repeatedly getting "Database Error" when an MSE email link attempts to open up in MSE.

Guess this forum is getting so-ooo-oo popular, it's becoming increasingly over-loaded. . .
  • This is really odd.
On 16-12-2006 Icstis web site gave this
This is what we know about the number you entered (08712089405).

ICSTIS does not regulate this type of number. However we can tell you the following.

    * This is classified as a Special Services higher rate: up to and including 10p for BT customers (non-internet) number.
    * It is provided by TELSTRA EUROPE LIMITED.
    * And costs 10ppm [in pence or pounds where 'pm' means 'per minute' and 'pc' means 'per call'].
    Today it gives this.
This is what we know about the number you entered (08712089405).
ICSTIS does not regulate this type of number. However we can tell you the following.
    * This is a probably an erroneous number and is marked as: Not Designated
It appears Icstis is giving this information for all 0871 and 0870 numbers.
Why dodn't Icstis want the public to know who are supplying the numbers that are being used to attempt to swindle them.
  • Just had one from "MCS" telling me there's a message waiting for me. I need to call back 0871 240 1400.
Yeah, right! I thought this scam had been stopped?
  • Received a recorded call this morn from 'MCS' told me I have a message to collect, gave a tel no to call which I wasn't ready for, it was too quick for me to jot down ! Guess this call was intended to be left as a message ?! I checked 1471 and the number was; 0871 240 1280 - I couldn't find anything related to this online, but found MCS here in this thread ! Looks like they must be a dodgy company using various numbers for this 'scam'... what a load of plop !

Just thought I'd add Martin Lewis rocks, he's great whenever on Jeremy Vine Radio 2. :T

Dont know how to do quotes!

I get frequent messages left to ring these numbers. They are always on my work telephone number because when i fill surveys or anything in i never put my right telephone number but usually my work phone number. Now I have decided to put in the telephone number of the local phone box on the corner of a dimly lit street!
    Just about to give up!

I had one that said it was a baliff information hotline which baffled me as I've never owed any money. Was quite worrying at the time though.

I had a call from one of these "Information Team" scams on 12th Jan. I didn't catch the whole of the 0871 number but it came from a landline number in Reading so I reported it to OFCOM. I know they don't investigate individual complaints but I've just called the number and it's unobtainable.

It's probably not related - I suppose the scammers just move around a lot, although it could actually be OFCOM's work. I'm sure they've had plenty of complaints already but it can only help if they get another one each time it happens.

The page I used to post my complaint is this one. Its title implies that it's only about silent calls, but they seemed to accept it.
