Options
Hi

Got home today to a message on the answering machine

"Oh Hi this is Adam from the information team, we currently have a message awaiting your collection. To collect your message just call 07077683**3 , ok thanks"

Has anyone come across this sort of thing before?

Thanks in advance

The only reason people fall for this is because, hearing an '07' number, they assume the number is a UK mobile whereas, of course, only numbers starting 077, 078 and 079 are UK mobile numbers.

070776 numbers cost 47½p to call at all times from a BT landline (see HERE).

OTOH, it's not difficult to see through this scam if you just stop to think for a second or two.

You have an answering machine and, on it, there's a message telling you to ring a number to ..... er ..... pick up a message!

Now I'm not that good with modern technology but it seems logical to me to assume that, if Adam really had a message for you, instead of leaving a message on your answering machine asking you to call a number to pick up a message, he would have ..... er ..... left the message.

But the scammers wouldn't make any money then. _pale_
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • This is worthy of a BUMP.

Beware the 070... number! My OH had a missed call on their mobile today and guess how it started?

    Don't fall for these scammers...
...and then the window licker said to me...
  • Got the same message last Tuesday, having seen Jayne Barrett's scam slot on BBC's North West Tonight at 6.30pm, I emailed her and asked if she could investigate, she may mention it on tomorrows program.
Your number is slightly different to mine do the scammers use a block of numbers and change to avoid trouble.

My phone is with BT and I have premium rate calls barred. Never found the need for them yet.

    Premium rate numbers start 09.

Numbers such as that mentioned in this thread are not covered by such barring.

If you ring that number you'll probably hear a constant ringing tone - this will be played down the phone making you think the call hasn't connected but you're paying for it or find yourself put on hold or in a queue. All the while you'll be paying up to 50p per minute.
  • Hi,

Another twist to this story is that I have heard of people dialling 0871*** number only to be greeted by "Hi this is Ted (Joe, Jim, Mike, etc) and we have a message for you, please hold while we transfer you to an operator" obviously this never happens and you are held on the phone listening to music while the charges rack up....beware!!!
