Left lane for left and straight on, right for right?

Get lots of drivers pulling the manoeuvre shown below in red, i.e. turning left in a right lane not designated for turning left, where it is possible someone in the left lane wants to go straight on. Those who do it are often easily overtaken on the dual carriageway, so they can't be doing it to get somewhere faster! The roundabout sign prior clearly indicates that there is a straight on.

I admit I rarely take the straight on indicated in green, and few other cars do. It does go somewhere (not a no through road) but is single-track. I bet if I did want to go down there the idiots would beep their horn at me     and insurance in such a collision would go 50/50 or something stupid like that?

Green is not straight on, it's clear even from that image that the road at the bottom is a minor road and not the same road as the one at the top of the image.

Red is also wrong, but I can see why people do it.... The main road (a dual carriageway?) is clearly West to East.

Give us a link to that from Google maps.

It is, it is effectively at 12.O'clock from the entry point, it makes no difference whatsoever that it is not a main road.

The red line is wrong, they should join the roundabout in their left hand lane, ( unless road markings dictate otherwise ).

The only drivers that should use the red marked lane on approach to the roundabout are those going off to the right, or those making an effective "U " turn and going back up the same road from which they joined.;)

Way I was taught for a 2 lane roundabout was if you wanted to make a turning 00:01 : 11:59 stick to the left hand lane, if you want to make a turning 12:00 - 00:00 take the right hand lane - obviously taking into account road markings/signing at each particular location...so I would agree with Inactive :)
  • It's horses for courses , read the road and take the route you consider safest. Red is def wrong. Green is good, you would not want to be in the RH lane as traffic from the major junct on the left will make entry and stuff your exit, so to speak.

dannymccann, i really don't get your explanation. 12:00-6:00 and 6-12:00 perhaps...or were you literally talking about the time of day??!!

Anyways, because the main road goes left right as you're approaching it, you could argue also that unless markings on the road clearly advise otherwise, you could be in the left lane approaching in order to turn right.

I have a similar issue on my way home. A motorway exit. The roundabout has 3 exits (in addition to the motorway on/off slips). One is left, to a smallish industrial estate. The other two are to the right. As I take the first right, I'm happy to be in the left lane approaching the roundabout even though I'm technically passing 2 exits (estate and motorway on slip). It's not a huge junction so no painted lane markings.

And I was taught, up to and including 12.00 = left, after 12.00 = right.

And for the poster who didn't understand that it refers to the position of your exit on the roundabout diagram on the sign as you approach.

It's all dependant on road marking and signage, I can think of a number of islands where LH lane is not for straight on. In fact I know of a 3 lane island where left and middle lanes are for left turn, but you still get idiots trying to go straight on from the left hand lane.....
The design of that island is such that when stopped in the left hand lane, you are being guided to to turn left.

Can the OP please post a link to Google maps???

So can I. There is one in Ringwood where left lane is for left turn only and right is for straight on and right but there is clear additional marking on the carriageway and signage to show this deviation from the 'standard rule'. The 12.00 rule holds good for situations where there is no additional indication to the contrary.

People will always continue to drive like retards on roundabouts. I've been cut up loads of times with people in the wrong lane (different to that picture). Unless something happens to these people (Police action or an accident) then they'll never change their ways.
