My local HSBC branch has a coin counting machine. Very handy - stick my First Direct debit card into it, pour in my coins (no need to bag or count them), and my account is credited with no fuss at all.

WHY do more banks not have this??

Thinking about switching to HSBC just for this

Thanks, that's a real shame that services are limited.

Unfortunately she can't take them on lunch break, as 1/she very rarely gets a 'lunch break' to herself, and 2/like today, she is often 'out and about' with her job.

She can't/won't use the £1 coins for shopping, it's a theory she has, that if she sees the money building up it will prevent her from smoking again... I dunno! but that's her theory so up to her I guess!

RBS banks have the coin counters as well, although not in every branch. You just pour in your coins and it goes straight into your account. You then get a receipt listing how much you had in each denomination as well as the total amount. They are pretty handy, although I always know how much I am putting in anyway.
  • To be fair to the bank that is one hell of a lot of coins to plonk on the counter on a Saturday morning!

That said allowing customers to deposit their money into the bank's coffers is pretty much the minimum level of service one would expect from a branch whether it be coins or notes.

It takes the same amount of time to check a load of bagged coins, using the usual Omal scales that most banks have, as it does to count a pile of notes. What is the difference, it is just a silly rule that someone in a back office that does not come into contact with customers has dreamed up.

I think it's part of the plot to move us all to a cashless society...

many banks and building societies limit the amount they take in; coin is heavy.

If she goes to the bingo maybe they'd swap it for paper money for her. When I worked there they got through loads of £1 coins. We had to give out change in £1 coins because, after passing through booksales the customers would walk through the arcade (£1 slots) to get to the table where (surprise surprise) the table took £1 coins to play cashline bingo.

OP if it'd been me I'd have stamped my foot, asked to see the manager and muttered about moving my account;)
£500 is only 25 bags of coins - wouldn't have taken THAT long to weigh!

The RBS branch on Sauchiehall St has them, you can also feed it cheques.

My bank - Nationwide - made a fuss about taking much less than this - about 10 bags of coins, I guess, on a Saturday. I took them round the corner the a Lloyds bank where I have an ancient account with 47p in it. They changed them for me no bother. If I'd had more time and motivation I'd have kicked up a fuss at Nationwide, especially considering the business I do with them, the sums I have invested with them and the length of time I've been a customer. However, I decided to get on with my day and just say thanks nicely to the Lloyds staff. Must be losing my touch!
