Bank don't take coins on specific days?

Before I go into a massive rant, just wanted to see if this is common knowledge.
My mum took down £1 coins (£500 worth) to the bank this am (Saturday). They were bagged into the proper amounts, so no counting required. (although I believe they weigh coins now anyway?)
Anyway, the guy behind the counter said they don't take coins on a Saturday. When my mum asked why, she was told 'we just don't'.
My mum works 6 days a week (including a Sat), and Saturday morning is the only time she can get down to the bank. She had to carry the coins around all day with her as she couldn't deposit them.
Is this standard practice? It was Halifax.

My bank (Nationwide) won't accept more than 5 bags of coins at a time.0

Yep, from when I was a treasurer for a charity I know of a few branches that would not take anything more than a few bags at any time.Gone ... or have I?0

Not taking more than a few bags at any given time is fair enough I guess, but not taking any on a specific day??!

Not that unusual. Lots of banks don't take coins at busy times, and if that branch's busy times are Saturdays that would explain it.
My local HSBC branch has a coin counting machine. Very handy - stick my First Direct debit card into it, pour in my coins (no need to bag or count them), and my account is credited with no fuss at all.0 -

The town I live in isn't a particularly busy one, so can't see busyness being an excuse. Which is just that, a branch being busy is no excuse to drop services really.
Missile, my mum stopped smoking and saved the money she would have spent in a huge jar in £1 coins as visual motivation to not start again.

Business account holders are charged for banking coins/cash, so they can probably go anytime, but if a private customer comes in at a busy time on a free bank account, I'm not surprised if they decline until a quiet day.0

You seem to be living under some misapprehension that banks offer customer service i.e. offer a service when a customer needs it as opposed to when they find it convenient. Once you get over that everyting will be fine.0

Unfortunately she works, so that she can pay the mortgage that she also holds with that bank
Maybe she should pay them when she finds it convenient..rather than when they say so.. interesting!

Banks only offer a limited service on a Saturday, or are closed.
Take the coins on a weekday or change them at a Post Office in her lunch break.
