What really irritates me is when I go into a shop and an assistant comes over and says" You alright there?" My answer is always "Fine thanks, how are you?"
Whatever happened to the good old ("May I help you sir?")
Another irritation is shop workers addressing me as "mate". I complained about this in a Tesco store and the supervisor was surprised as she though it was perfectly ok to be addressed like that. Ye gods!
This is an interesting one.
My partner hates it when shop assistants ask "may I help you," as he feels like it's a blatant selling technique, and if he wanted help he would have asked for it. He prefers people to say "Hi, how are you," or, "Is everything ok," or something similar.
I, on the other hand, find those to be far too personal. I don't like a stranger to ask how I am, because I know they don't really care, and if I wasn't ok, I wouldn't tell personal issues to a shop assistant. I'd rather they stuck to their job.
There's a third type of customer (as I'm a shop assistant, so I've had to experiment) who doesn't like either, and would prefer you to strike up a conversation about something, such as if I were to wander up to someone and say, "oh yes, that's a very nice tv, have you noticed x y z."
Then there are customers who just like to be left alone... those who want you to fall over yourself to serve them.
You can't please everyone... or anybody in most cases.0
