I'm not sure I get your point here. Are you saying that the UN shouldn't be intervening in Libya because they're not intervening elsewhere?
yes i am saying that exactly. i'm saying it's clear they are only interfering because of oil interests. to say anything else is just !!!!!!!!. everyone knows it.Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

It would be a free for all living hell
a lot of parts of the globe are exactly that. the UN only seems to stop living hell for certain nations. for some places it happily ignores living hell. in yet others it seems to create it. just because we happen to enjoy the stability and prosperity here don't forget plenty of others are paying the price for that.
and let's not forget we've enjoyed a fair bit of prosperity from selling arms to libya over that last few years.
total utter bloody hypocrisy. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
I've had my fill of ranting Arab men on the TV. Turned it off now. Arabic is such a hideously ugly language and accent, like they're perpetually hawking up phlegm to gob everywhere.0

you sound like my OH. he's iranian and says exactly that. the iranians do a very good line in arab hating. have to say persian is beautiful in comparison. kind of like the difference between german and french. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

nothing to do with bombing the !!!! out of several of their populations then?
commenting on the sound of the arab language is probably on akin to commenting on the grimness of the birmingham accent in terms of hate generation. i actually know arabs who admit arabic is not the most melodious sound in the world. there are quite a few differences between the arabic spoken in different countries / areas - even more than the difference between american english and australian english for example. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

What I think it comes down to is this: The UK and other western governments misjudged the situation and assumed Gadaffi to be finished. In the interests of fostering good relations (and continuing oil deals) with the incoming regime, they swung behind them in public statements, urging Gadaffi to go quickly without making trouble. I'm quite sure they were anticipating rapid regime change with no intervention necessary. Now it's turned into a full blown civil war, and Gadaffi may have regained the upper hand, the Western governments - having totally burned their bridges with him - are panicking.0 -

You've hit the nail on the head – that's exactly what I thought.
The sooner we stop being reliant on oil from the Middle East and disengage from the countries in that bloc, the better – but I fear many of us love our creature comforts too much. Absolutely have to have three cars to a family, a giant flat-screen TV plus other assorted TVs for every room in the home, iPods, iPads, computers, and so on. So essential to our live, and after all, we're worth it...0 -

it's not just about tvs and cars though is it. just about everything relies on oil whether it's the transportation and harvesting of the food we eat or the cladding for the electrical wiring in your home. not to mention pharmaceuticals.
even my recycling bins use oil in their production.
unless the government decides to re-allocate the land into smallholdings for each member of the population (would there even be enough to go around?) and we decide to forgo heat unless we have trees left on our own patches to burn or some left on common land i don't think anyone in this country is in a position to take the moral high ground over oil. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
