He's playing a game which he is winning. Declare a ceasefire, Arab league believe him, US/UK plane fire on Libyans, Arab league not happy, guess who are the bad boys? Iraq MkII0

This seems to be the sort of cease fire that involves carrying on shooting.
Is it just me or does anyone else wonder where these rebels have suddenly sprung from? Who's organising them, arming & training them? Time will tell who actually wins in the end I guess.Sir_Humphrey wrote: »Whatever he is, he isn't mad. He is very devious.
The two aren't mutually exclusive. In fact many 'mad' people are devious too.0 -

You're not the only one. In fact I think it's too early to tell whether any of the recent "popular movements" will turn out any better than the regimes they are attempting to depose.0 -
I suspect he is doing a land-grab before really easing off the overt stuff.
It would be more difficult to bomb his tanks if they already under cover in Benghazi than sitting around in the open.
The UN has not mandated regime change, the resolution is intended to protect civilians. It is not in the remit of the UN to initiate regime change as far as I understand. The hope seems to be applying enough pressure on the regime that he is pushed out by his own side. Something similar happened with Milosevic, but it was a very close run thing.
I would not generalise about who the opposition are in various countries. Some countries would seem to be nearer to being at a stage where democracy could be possible, including Egypt and Tunisia. Libya does not strike me as one of them, and if Gaddafi goes, the best hope would be for a less despotic dictator rather than democracy.
So far, Britain and France have gone by the book at the UN, which is very good. However, I am uneasy about WHY China and Russia did not veto. Also, note that Tunisia and Egypt are not joining in this particular "adventure".Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Sir Humphrey,
For your info, now that they have not heeded to the no fly zone as the news clearly shows with one of there planes being shot down it is clear Gaddafi has no intensions to bring peace and I am now more than ever before backing this.

Gaddafi would want peace - with Libya back under his thumb. I am simply explaining how he might try to achieve this, I am certainly not advocating for the brute!
What I am trying to demonstrate is how he may try to maximise his position.
There are wider issues as to how the UN resolution would work in practice, and also what effect it might have on other uprisings in other countries. What happens if he can cling on, and there is a prolonged war?Politics is not the art of the possible. It consists of choosing between the disastrous and the unpalatable. J. K. Galbraith0 -
Wonder if we actually have a 'plan' this time.0

And that is the point he now will never have that he went about it totally wrong and chose to use force against his own citizens and continues to do so
He does not care a to** about them he knows once he is gone the whole truth about his governance and the atrocities he committed will come out indeed he is merely using force to protect his own life.0 -
why are we so keen to support the libyan rebels (who are armed) and yet are standing by whilst unarmed protestors in yemen are shot dead? same with bahrain. what is worse about libya? Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0
