You could ask for a photograph of the package with the contents and label visible if you're not sure whether to trust the seller. If they say they've got rid of it or anything then they're probably lying

Personally I wouldn't be trusting them! Seems a bit too odd and they say 'ebay notified me to explain this all to you....' which sounds like rubbish to me!

I would ignore their messages from now on and just deal with it via ebay with an Item not as described case. When you put in the tracking details you'll probably just get refunded.
If it somehow doesn't get your money back then try claiming from parcelforce based on the parcel being tampered with. NOT on the wrong house number thing as that's a complete non issue you should forget about.

I am not sure what you would do with the photo.

If the seller has opened and escalated a dispute, added the tracking and it shows as delivered/attempted or refused, they will win the case.

A buyer returning an item, does not have to prove signature, just delivery/attempt or refusal.

    HI
i have send an item back to the seller as it was not as listed as brand new in box and because it was not as described so i send the item back it is TouchSmart - 600-1220uk i paid 735 to the seller. i received an email from the seller saying...
i have received the item back and when ive opened the box there is no computer just a lump of wood could you tell me whats going on here ??????????????? i have already rang ebay and they have informed me to contact you regarding this matter ?

so what should i do now ops this is the tracking info..
Parcel number: P************** Part of consignment: WZ****** Service: Express 48 Delivery Postcode: DH9 9NR Delivered on: 14-03-2011 Delivered at: 09:10 Signed for by: TUPMAN M 86 Signature: ****

i send it to 85 why is showing 86 can someone help me plss..
On your receipt for sending the item back to the seller should be the WEIGHT. This will prove whether you sent a computer or a lump of wood.
Open a 'not as described case' on eBay and enter the tracking number. The seller is not obliged to refund if the item arrives back to him 'not as sent'. However, reply quoting the weight of item on your receipt. Also cut and paste the acceptance signature. The seller will then have to submit the weight of the wood. eBay will refund you and advise the seller to pursue a claim from the postage carrier.

Not one carrier parcel I have ever sent has the weight on the receipt. I also use a per parcel Royal Mail service, so no weight is recorded there either.

On the whole Ebay/Paypal will not involve themselves, they generally refer the complainant to the Police.

The buyer in this instance has the contract with the carrier, not the seller, so the seller cannot claim. They can however, report it to the police. Whether they will get anywhere with that is another matter entirely.

I won't even cover how you would force a seller to 'submit a weight of wood'.

The buyer just needs to do as I said above. Nothing more at the moment.

    .

    Nothing.

It wasn't suggested as a matter of practicality... more of working out how to treat the seller.
I think most reasonable people would be concerned about taking money from the seller incase they're a genuine innocent person. The OP seems to be or they'd just have completed the ebay case by now.

Then the rest was practical advice.

    I am sorry I don't follow that.

If a box of wood was returned by you to me and then you asked me to photograph it, I would not be best pleased. If I had put the wood there myself, I wouldn't hesitate to put it back again and pose for you. But for what good? Neither of those would help any claim or serve any purpose whatsoever?????

You're assuming that the scam would be to put actual wood in the package when it's much more likely that a scammer would just SAY that the package arrived with wood in since saying it was empty wouldn't work for parcel weights. So it would be calling their bluff in a way unless they can easily locate a suitable sized bit of wood.

Maybe I'm being too naive but I would be worried they weren't a scammer and could be telling the truth & that the parcel could have been tampered with.

Yes, it is effectively faffing around as far as getting money back is concerned which is why the rest of what I said was about how to get money back if the OP wasn't concerned with whether the seller was genuine.

It doesn't matter whether we think you did it.

It would really help if you could try to write in proper English and in sentences. If English is not your first language then apologies, but please say so. If you are English, then you are making yourself very difficult to understand.
