I'm trying to replace my conventional boiler with a combi but amd not sure what to go for - views on Glowworm please?
Also can amyone recommend a good fitter in South London - it seems cheaper to buy the boiler myself and get it fitted (or am I wrong?)
All suggestions gratefully received!

Good afternoon: avoid Gworm. I'd recommend Vaillant, Viessmann and Remeha but a boiler is only as good as the standard of installation and the annual servicing.
If you decide to purchase the boiler (and don't forget the other materials/components as well) first find a RGI who is willing to fit a boiler purchased by you (the reasons have been recounted several times in this forum).
Take a look through the forum for details on other installations....standard of the specification and the cost of labour (more expensive in London) will vary widely.
South London covers a lot of territory...if you narrow it down a bit perhaps someone could give you a recommendation but getting a name from a source you trust is the best route.

Many thanks Canucklehead
Is it better to supply the boiler myself or get someone to supply and fit for a fixed price? It really needs to be under £1500 for the job (if that's possible), though I know London is always more expensive.
I'm in the Streatham area - my problem is I don't know any good plumbers/heating engineers! Only people I've used for work are a building company (not had any plumbing/heating work done)....don't really have a trusted source to go from but I can try to ask around.
If anyone knows of someone who could work in my area I can always geta quote to match up to others (want to get at least 3). I take it from the comments it's not worth going through BG or another power company?

Hi..tbh that is a tiny budget for conversion from a open vented to sealed system. I know the OH hasn't charged that little for at least 10 years in your neck of the woods (pre-condensing days hence simpler and much cheaper install).
There are folks out there who will fit for your budget but I suspect they would be either working illegally i.e. not Gas Safe Registered , not meeting even 'Basic Practice' or both. More info here.

Hi,
Cost.... Cannot tell over the net.
OH, Other Half...me, GSR. (Gas Safe Register(ed)
Open vented... This is what I would assume you mean by conventional. A small expansion tank in a roof space or, in a flat, high up in a cupboard. Although you could have a sealed system, a red football sized vessel with a pressure gauge and pipework.
You would also need an adequate water pressure for the combi.
Check the links on previous post.

Thanks so much - your advice is really useful. I need to try to find some good local engineers to quote me on a new condensing boiler then (open vented or system boiler?). Hopefully that's a slightly cheaper option - I hadn't used my little grey cells - of course you'd need to do a lot of work if your changing from one type of system to another
I don't think it's worth just fixing my current one: it's about 10 years old, a potterton, and now constantly clicks out (I know it's a well know fault) and my radiators heat up when I've only got the hot water heating on!0 -

Good afternoon: lots of decisions then....try the CIPHE or the HHIC
for RGIs near you if you can't get personal recommendations. Always check registration with Gas Safe Register.
Good luck with your install.
