I am sadly one of those that used to fit Ideal boilers a few years ago.

I fitted just over 100 of these piles of you know what and strangely I have just over a 40% failure rate on them.

Seems like for once, which is spot on.
  • I am just waiting for my three quotes to come in!
It looks like it will be a Worcester Bosch.
Then out will come that piece of s**t the Ideal ISOR HE325.
It has been in for only three years and has given endless grief. The final straw, the heat exchanger has gone!

If only I had done some research three years ago and not just relied on my gas fitter.
No he wont be getting the job!

I've had a Glow Worm energy saver for 11 years and it has never missed a beat so far.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    that's good news ..

but problem is ..by the time you find out whats good and bad, the good model is discontinued ..

You never know whether it is good or bad until you have had it for a few years, at that point it is too late to change. I had my previous Potterton Netaheat for 21 years virtually without maintenance, just the occasional clean by myself. It required a couple of components in that time, but nothing major. We only changed it to get a condensing boiler for our retirement. My sister still has a Netaheat and hers is at least 30 years old and still going strong.

  • Modern boilers would be lucky to see 10 years, not 21.
The phrase, 'they dont make them like they used to' is never more poignant, then when talking about boilers.
  • Yeah ..if they are going to make them so poor ..
they should all have quick flex disconects on the gas lines ..and plumbing and flue a unversal mounting on the wall..have a unversal system ..so you could swap them over like a washing machine..and mount any make of boiler in its place in twenty mins...and save a fortune .

first company that comes out with that idea will make a fortune.

Looks like we have to replace (and resite: more money) our boiler which is a Baxi Powermax 155x huge thing in a cupboard in our flat. The pressure keeps climbing so high we've had to turn it off. It is 11 years old and Baxi aren't supporting parts for much longer.

We need a new boiler sited on an outside wall. That wall is right the other end of the flat from the bathroom and shower (no option to move it closer) so would need to be powerful enough to cope. Current powermax is about 5m closer to the bathroom.
I spoke to a heating engineer who favours Bosch boilers. He prefers them over Vaillant. I'd not heard of Viesmann so didn't mention those.

I don't know if it makes any difference but the heating radiators are all on one level and there are only 5 of them and 2 towel rails in the flat. Water pressure is reasonable in normal weather but it is a top flat. A bath and a shower need to have decent water pressure.
Any recomms please (or otherwise)? It is going to be v expensive (London).

Is it normal to get a decent warranty with a new boiler installation?

PS BG engineer got it going again and says pick Vaillant or WB if a new one as parts are hard to get or take ages from lousy CS at Viesmann. Can be up to 2 weeks' wait. At the moment we are just saying/praying Long Live the Powermax!
